Default Things to love about winter

So..yes its here again. I was thinking today that although I hate the season, there are some things about winter that are....bearable....

Getting into the house when you are sooo cold...

Hot soup....

Walking in freshly fallen snow....

What are yours?

Mulled wine

Being warm and comfy in bed when it's freezing cold and howling wind wind/rain outside

Perfect winter mornings when there is frost and everything is really pretty

Pubs with log fires

The smell of hot chestnuts on city streets, especially in that London

Christmas adverts - the good ones

The annual fresh start at new year

Wrapping up christmas presents

Have just had a much needed bowl of hot soup after a morning/afternoon hike up Kerloch Hill (about 20 miles west of Aberdeen). Actually it wasnt that chilly on the hill, and the walk was easy, the only difficult bit was the socializing with the large group of folk I was walking with!! I just about managed though.

No snow at that height though (just below 2000ft) but that will change in the next few weeks I imagine!!

Default Re: Things to love about winter

All the mulled things all the time
Having an excuse to not leave the house
Frosty mornings
Not showing any skin till April
Cosy slippers
Parks are nearly empty
Red skies
Knitting
Fancy cheese
Hot water bottles
There's a kind of bare, pared down look to nature in winter that I find really soothing for some reason
Fireplaces in pubs
Lebkuchen
Chocolate log
Feeding birds
Amaretto
Baileys
Ghost stories
Sticking cloves in oranges
Christmassy Yankee candles
Muppets Xmas Carol

I hate a lot about winter in reality but at the same time I'm a sentimental winter dork.

Of course, Andy Burnham is the best thing of all, how could I forget? and yeah I don't know why but ghost stories feel wintery to me, I guess a lot are set at Christmas maybe?

please don't say this is still Autumn,.nooo. it must be Winter already, it's so cold

ech,..

Winter walks, scrunching over snow, with the bright sun dazzling over the frost making everything look colourful.
red sunrise and sunset, making for cool pictures.
squirrels are more readily spotted,
driving in the snow (I find it quite exhilarating)
I can have an excuse for covering up with umpteen layers,
family get-togethers,
staying indoors and getting cosy.
holidays from work.

Mulled cider (although wine is nice too)
Seeing and hearing from relatives (who don't seem to bother for the rest of the year)
Christmas films on tv (really cheesy but i've been enjoying watching them)

^ Gosh, those things are all very human, aren't they?

I was thinking more along the lines of watching a flock of migratory redwings and fieldfares, eagerly pecking at fallen apples on the cold, frosty ground; with the weak winter sun barely managing to rise above the silhouetted branches of the bare orchard trees, before setting once more.

I guess it's a good thing that we're all different though.

[And we did at least have the apples in common - for your mulled cider!]

^ Funnily enough, I live in a city too; and alas, like you, never get to see anything like that - maybe just occasionally (and very briefly) whilst out driving on the roads for work. So most of what I said came purely from memory and imagination rather than my immediate experience - we can always dream, you know! I just got the impression from your list of 'things to love' that, dreaming or otherwise, we would probably be thinking of very different things! And, as I implied, that's not a criticism or a problem at all.
