Cheers I decided not to go with Uni this year, filled out some DSA but not sure if I even done it correctly.

P.s. I pulled out of Uni last minute after being very, very slow when deciding on things since I don't have any specific interests.

It's interesting to know this.

The most prominent aspect that puts me off uni is the exams.
Does anyone know if you could sit in a separate room on your own for the exams rather than being trapped in a hall with other people??

Absolutely. You'd need to talk to the disability services department in good time so this can be organised (bureaucracy can be slooow), but yep, they should sort that for students who need it, no problem.

thanks. i am applying as i have had 2 years off uni due to SA and feel i need some changes made to be able to go back ever and is good too see what sort of things you can get to help. i am not sure about the support person, i think that would cause more social interaction and stress for me.

i did go back briefly last year but they were unable to make the changes necessary for me to carry on, i was too anxious to have the DSA assessment so they could not hep me much as the disability services is funded by the DSA and you need to have the assessment for them to help is what i was told. plus i am on better medication so i hope i can make it this time.

I applied to do Computer Science at Leeds Beckett Uni/Manchester ad Web Design at Huddersfield. I already got an approval from Huddersfield so I thought I'd try at the other two bigger campuses.

Sent off my disability grant application two days ago, the G.P wrote the in the box that requested photocopied evidence so I have a feeling they'll be sending that section back

I know this thread is generally focused around DSA, but it'd be nice to hear how people with SA deal with uni in general. With my 2nd year coming up, it's terrifying knowing that I have to do it all again and this time really appear confident. Any advice??

I'm in university now (third year coming up here, second year on course since I switched).

I found it horrible the past 2 years. The shared accommodation with pretty spiteful girls didn't help. I'm living alone this year. I've had the counsellor all the way through and it's not done much but Im going to see a GP and hope they can help (disability services here wont even see you unless you have a GP note saying they should). I made one friend and she started to bully me so that's out the window.

I'm still hopeful living alone, and getting extra help will turn everything around. I'd recommend anyone going to uni with SA to check out their counselling services and disability services as a high priority. I didn't go to my GP any of first year, and only once last year (who ended up google searching my anxiety), I regret that.

I've been dreading graduation day since the day I completed my UCAS application. The graduation ceremony for my university is in November and I've put off booking tickets and ordering a gown for ages but the deadline is only a week a way now. I've been toying with the idea of not going to my graduation but I have a feeling I'd regret it if I did.

Today I received an e-mail from my university that I've won an award for my work and that there will also be a ceremony for that too. I had a mini panic attack just reading the email so I'm not sure how well I'll do accepting the award in front of a crowd. This award hasn't helped me make my decision but rather intensify the confliction I feel between the regret of not going or the social anxiety of both ceremonies.

Deep down I think I know that going is the right thing to do, if I was reading someone else's post about the same issue I would definitely encourage them to go. But it's me and the mere thought of the ceremonies is nauseating.

Congratulations! Hope you're feeling proud of yourself for this, it's certainly something special.

I've recently started a Masters and let's just say my social anxiety is putting a real downer on things. I'm not making friends but everyone clearly is. They're all lovely people but they don't really talk to me - maybe I'm just giving off some don't-talk-to-me vibe or it's because I'm naturally quiet or because I panic and my mind goes blank when someone occasionally does try and talk to me. I don't know. And next week we all have to talk to the class about a topic for a couple of minutes and I'm set on skipping the class (god knows what I'll be like for the assessed group presentation).

Anyway, I haven't sought any professional help for my social anxiety so obviously haven't declared it to uni and doubt I ever will. I just have to get through the year and then it'll be over. I just hate that, once again, my social interaction difficulties are destroying a good opportunity to make friends.

Hi all you students I'm currently a third year student, and only just receiving support through my university. I got offered Cbt through the university in my second year however I found it little help.
As the thread says, you can get DSA, I have been told this takes about 14 weeks for the application process to go through. However, there is a second option that I am heading down as 14 weeks would be too long to wait in my situation as I need support faster and 14 weeks would take me near enough to the end of the year.

What I am applying for is a teaching and support learning agreement. This process takes only a few weeks. I just needed to get a letter from my doctor stating my condition and how it affects me, how long its likely to last etc. And then I will have a needs assessment which from that they can set up the appropriate support. This is similar to DSA but without the funding support and it doesn't take that long. So if you're in your third year I highly recommend seeing if you can get something similar that doesn't take as long as DSA. This can access you the same support as DSA, for example changing examinations from oral to written, extensions etc.

That's the worst. When the tutor says he doesn't want anyone working on their own, I die inside a bit. Everyone is with someone else already.

Halfway through first year and I already feel like dropping out. I have made zero friends here and feel I'm not trying hard enough, but it's exhausting and terrifying. I don't talk to anyone in my halls anymore although I don't know why. However, I can't drop out as I want and need to get my degree and I know I will regret it so much. It's stressful to know work after uni will be even harder.

I can totally relate to this. Uni for me (well over 20 years ago now) was hell. All those people out there mixing and having a ball. Me holed up in my room wishing either me or the world would disappear.
I did nothing but work and that was my excuse then for not socialising. It led to decent grades but a miserable time.

I wish they had had more support for SA in my day!

I know the feeling all too ell so I sympathize. I have managed to get over the worst of my SA, but I'm still quite avoidant of people and depressions is probably a bigger problem for me nowadays. It is possible to gain more confidence, get in contact with a counselor and see your GP (I know this is hard but it seemed to help me). I found ssris helped me and also changing my attitude to whats important in life. I find that things have improved a bit as we now have more help like DSA and counselling through the university.

Volume 2 of my University applications are now here, and I believe I'm far more likely to actually attend now I actually have a specific degree in mind (but not specific career lol).

I shall have to try remember to fill this DSA stuff in, because while I am somewhat more sociable I am also still very depressed, though not quite as existentially dread depressed as back in the old day of when I first posted in this thread.

Thanks! I may not have remembered otherwise, now I just need to wait for another uni to give me an offer so I can pick my first and second choices.
