Elliot Granville Small lived alone in a small cottage, his cottage stood all alone on the outskirts of a forest, he’d lived alone since he was a small boy never knowing what exactly happened to his relatives nor to be honest caring that much he figured if they wanted him they’d come and find him and until that time he was happy.
Ten o’clock chimed on the mantle clock time for bed thought Elliot but maybe one more brandy, sliding back into his comfy armchair he flicked lazily through the channels, odd he thought why’s my cottage on the telly confused he moved closer for a better view he could see his cottage but he could also see through the walls like they were there but not really, the camera panned round to the left drifting, then shot up skywards stopping just above the clouds showing a perfect new moon and small wispy clouds. He heard a knock on the window. Wondering who it could be and puzzled from what he’d just seen Elliot slowly moved from his chair cautiously picking up the largest ash log from the logbasket, descretely brandishing it behind him he opened the door just a crack all he could see were a pair of well worn running shoes carefully placed symmetrically to the red tiles laces still tied in double knots each perfectly equal. Elliot could smell paraffin strongly he sniffed the air inhaling the fumes, he could feel something tightly grasping his wrists he couldn’t see anything but could hear a slow clicking sound from behind him and a rubbing noise to his left, moving his foot forwards he felt something soft but solid he realised the clicking sound was a zippo lighter being clicked open lit then shut again, he heard one more click then saw the the small lit flame come past the room went from darkness to flames illuminating his new surroundings. |
