Default gambling lost thousands

My parents used to be wealthy and had there own business for 18 years. I was a spoilt brat, my dad gave me everything until he became an alcoholic and lost everything.

Anyways my mum split 40 grand between me and my sis back in 2004 for our future. I invested the money and it increased to £26,000 in 5 years, when I got access to it, last may. Since then I started gambling at casino's to see if I could make more money. At first I only put small deposits on and starting winning big, then I got addicted at starting bidding £1000's. I've also spent £7000 on Cocaine, I was goig through difficult times and it made me feel good.

I've lost everything, only have £3000 left in the bank. My mother doesn't know that I blown it all and Im gutted.. I can't get the thought out my head. i'm now totally skint.

well first off i'd say, unless it's already sunk in, dont spend anymore. You still have some left.

Im not gonna say gambling it all was stupid (not gonna mention the cocaine part, thats different) but it's seemingly what you wanted to do with it. Your life man, live it however.

Id say - Put that 3000 in a ISA, get your ****ing head down and work your ass off. You can't change the past, so live for the future and forget about it. It may be hard, i know it would be for me, but turn it the **** around and try to make a silver lining out of it. That is honestly, all you can do. I've wasted money before, not on a scale like that, but i've wasted money (about 2000 to be precise). Also, find someone you can confine in. Internet forums don't cut it for a needing friend, find someone you can talk to.

Pm me if you want

It's done now. You know it wasn't the right thing to do but you weren't the first person to do it and get sucked in and you won't be the last. Gambling is very addictive and the only real winners are the totes.

Try and speak to gambling anonymous if you're struggling not to lose that last £3k. Many people end up in debt to gambling so try and look on the positive that you've not got to that stage.

Try not to beat yourself up because you've recognised that you have a problem and are asking for help. There is help out there and you can overcome this.

Take care

Try and put what's left into an account where your money is tied up with restricted access. At the very least ensure you would have to give a period of notice to get at it. That should help avoid doing anything you may regret when you're feeling low.

Personally I think that the addictive gene tends to run in families. With your dad it was alcohol and with you it's gambling. Try not to beat yourself up about what has happened. All you can do is to seek whatever help you need to ensure it doesn't continue.

It is gutting to think of money that's been squandered but put it into perspective - you've spent 23K in a year which is not really too bad. I know people who have recently lost a lot more in a shorter space of time by making supposedly wise investments, they probably wish they'd had a bit of fun with it instead of helplessly watching it disappear. The main thing is that you seem now to be ready to take a more sensible approach and that you've come out of the experience without huge debts. If you're worried what your family will think, you could tell them you lost it by investing in the stock market, you wouldn't be the only one.

Thanks for the responses peeps!

I just still can't get my head round it. Part of me's thinking to gamble that 3 grand but knowing my luck, I'll lose that aswell. If I invest it in an ISA, I'll only make like £500 in a year. And I can't believe I was stupid enough to spend £7000 on Cocaine. I was seriously messed up big time, If my mum found out about this I don't know what would happen. £23 K is a most peoples life savings and I blew it in under a year.

I have an addictive personality and it needs sorting out. I'm going to get specialist help. On top of this I have endocrine problems which aren't helping with my mentality. I'm going to try my hardest to save that 3K, **** gambling it, or wasting it on crap. I seriously need to sort myself out big time before it's too late.

Don't gamble that last 3 grand That's the mindset of a gambler Get out now while you still have something to salvage.

You won't even make £500 at current interest rates but at least your remaining money will be safe.

I'm going to draw it out and put it in my sisters account until I can sort my head out, cos I know I'll blow it. I'm shit with money. Going to see a specialist to get my head straight so that I don't waste anymore on those casinos.

I wish I never bought that book on gambling.

255 grand kate. How did you manage to lose that?

I still can't stop ruminating over it. I'm getting my own place soon and needed that money for furniture etc... I also wanted a mint car, and was hoping to start my own business but that ain't gonna happen now. I'm well and truly gutted. it'd take me years and years to save up that much money and I'd need a well paid job. I just can't believe how addictive gambling is. Once you start winning you get hooked until you lose it all. I should have gave up after losing a few £1000 but I carried on because I wanted to get back what I lost but instead I lost the lot. £16,000 at the casino and £7000 on cocaine. I'm off the coke now, thank god but Ill never get that money back. £23,000.

I bought a book on how to make thousands from gambling and thought that I could double the money I had, but now I'm more or less broke. I'm well pissed off.

I lost it when I moved to Mallorca.
House, cars, Holidays, personal loans to people ect ect. Living the high life in general...Big mistake.

I know how you feel. You go to your bank and see all those lovely zero's and the inner 'child' or 'fool' or whatever tells you it'll last forever. You'll claw it back in intrest. Oh just this last holiday. or flutter in your case. But it's never enough. You still haven't got you 'fix'

Money was the bain of my life...I'm pissed off that I allowed myself be sucked in. But I'm not sorry I don't have it.

I`ve been a gambler for over 20 years and have bet thousands over the years but luckily I`ve won almost as much as I`ve lost and have never been in debt because of it. I still bet but not anywhere near as much as I used to and only small stakes now although I`ve never bet big amounts anyway a few hundred being the biggest.

yeh dont bother gambling anymore easier said than done. I seen my mate loose £1000's at casinos and fruities. I gamble but i'm to sensible as cant stand the loss. I usually spend £20 on roulette and last 4 time walked out with £40 and £60 or break even usually, i know id loose it if put it all back on seen friends do it.

fruit machines you alway loose big i got my mate to stop this almost as wasted £90 some days. I could bet more on these bets but i bet low so dont mind if i loose a few quid, then i can continue on next matches.

Only way I see to make secure wins is betting poor odd on footbal games with right knowledge. I made steay gains betting small amounts on say 1/2 odds on draws anytime goal scorers etc. I could bet more on these bets but i bet low so dont mind if i loose a few quid, then i can continue on next matches. I probably a few £100 up could be more but i risk low amounts.

I hope you recover I have had addictive personality in certain things in past, luckily not gambling though as ruins lifes usually.

I can see on the coke side too until people have tried it people dont relise how great it feels and how hard it is to forget about the feeling of it, i done it occasionaly i have an illness though so makes me feel unwell but hard not to sometimes when friends having some, with me it was once had 1 line id have to do loads then, i'm fine once i slept dont feel like it then. It to expensive anyway and unless good stuff is bad on sinuses. Good luck with things

What did you gamble on out of curiosoty? at casino, even i can see the appeal as they can be a nice atmosphere in some of them

Mainly black jack, roulettes or poker which I learned to play through a friend who wasn't hooked on it. I don't think it was £16,000, I wasted on gambling; more like £10000, the rest went on coke and other stuff. Had some more earlier today (coke), not that much though, just an eigth. I'm going to rehab tomorrow, not going to gamble anymore. read too many horror stories.

yeah cokes awful its hard to forget about it once done it, i do it sometimes and get a fatique illness and makes me tirder for days. I only gone odd g's at weekends etc before mainly only done it as was high quality stuff. I prob saying to much police be at my door soon hahaha from reading this. I wish i never tried it id advise people to neve rtry it esp[ecially if they are hooked on cigerettes as is very likely will on coke too. I gave up fags 5 years ago and never have one or il be hooked again. I wouldnt beat urself up too much about it as millions of people do or have tried it and is more rife than youd think if look for reseach.

It really bad for your organs too, have you read online dangers of it on body it opened my eyes a lot.

If you do coke with someone or people do it around you it is very hard not to join in.

I heard if done alot or often it can take months or years to forget about it phycologcally it is that strong a stimulant. hope you sort it out, i think with gambling it is best just to avoid going as with my mate he will gamble if he goes it enevitable.

pokers hard to win you need good memory and concentration to remmeber hands and timing of it.

I'm done with gambling I think. I've read stories where people mainly in the States have lost milions of dollars. Loads of people have lost more than 100K, a lot more but most of these were addicts for years

I'm still hooked on the coke though psychologically. My body doesn't crave it like with physically addictive stuff such as Smack, Booze and Benzo's etc..

I was going to go to rehab today but scored some more instead, just now. Won't be touching it till tonight, but yeah, I'm seriously messed up at the minute. I was only ever into skunk before real crazy mad shit started happening to me the past year or so and it's the only thing that can actually keep me sane.

I'm definitely coming off though, that's for sure.

On the positive side at least you're not £23,000 in debt. I see dozens of new insolvency cases each week in my job and most of them are far...far more than £23k in the red (in fact £23k is the low end), so although it sucks for you to have spent so much so quickly it could be much worse. At least you've stopped spending whilst there's some money left.

Now you just gotta start saving again.
