Meg 2 The Trench - 6/10
I mean, it was exactly what I expected (i.e. stupid) but after a torrid working week then the light relief of the plot line absurdity did make me smile.

Freedom Writers

Brilliant film. Basically Dangerous Minds but with Hillary Swank instead of Michelle Pfeiffer. In some ways better than Dangerous Minds with an excellent soundtrack and all based on a true story.

The ruins.
Just terrible. I fast forwarded a good portion of it and didn't lose track of what was going on.

The Platform
Intense, not for the faint hearted, I wouldn't recommend watching it if you're not feeling ok in yourself as it's a bleak, dark watch, but I thought it was excellent, with fantastic performances and a good script.

The Bookshop

A very nice pleasent, feel good, film.

Emily Mortimer plays a woman who opens a bookshop in a seaside town but encounters resistance from some locals who set out to ruin her.

If you want a nice, feel good film you can't go wrong with this.

Nice plot twist at the end.

The Deepest Breath

Wow was this depressing to watch. Gah. There was a weird sort of morbid plot twist.

It's a documentary film about free diving.

Never let other people choose the film to watch/10

The War of the World's 1953

A classic. Back when men were men and women were hysterical. Better than the Tom Cruise version anyway.

A pretty decent train hijack film from 1979. Includes William Shatner who plays a con man. Shatner apparently did all his own stunts and was quoted as saying one stunt was "the most truly dangerous stunt I ever did".

One reason I like this film is that the antagonist looks a bit like my uncle.

Elephant

Based on the Columbine Massacre. Considering it's based on Columbine I expected a film about bullying but there's actually very little bullying in it, barely any.

A good film, beautifully made, but takes a long time to heat up. The actual shooting is well done and the cinematics are excellent. Apparently there was no script, with the actors improvising.

Excellent film. Supposed to be a horror but frankly wasn't scary. Sandra Bullock was outstanding as always.

Loch Ness

As recommended by the lovely Sea.

Good film. Takes a little while to get going but is an enjoyable romp. Has the bonus of including the lovely Joley Richardson. Also nice to see Fred Elliott in something else.

Nerve
A bit of a 'safe' look at internet dangers, based around an online game controlled by anonymous "watchers". Definitely not really dark enough, it probably would have been far more unsettling done as a Black Mirror episode, but I found it watchable and I liked the look of it, a lot of city lights and neon colour.

When Strangers Appear - Good thriller from 2001

Retribution - Enjoyable although predictable Liam Nesson film.

Johnny Mnemonic

Not a good film, even Keanu Reeves is bad in it. Has one plus, Dina Meyer, a redheaded goddess, is in it. Otherwise avoid.

Evil Dead Rise

I dunno. It wasn't great? It wasn't terrible? Was just hard to feel much of anything about it.

Horror's such a tricky genre, because if it's done right, I love it, but if it isn't then it feels like a borderline waste of time. But I don't know exactly what it is that I'm looking for. There's a specific secret ingredient, and without it horror just falls flat for me. I wish I knew what I was after.

Belfast - 7/10 Not a perfect film but I do think Kenneth Brannagh is a good director and the actors (esp the wee boy) were all good. Also had a lovely human warmth and moving moments.

The best of them. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are stupendous. Also has the gorgeous Linda Fiorentino in a short skirt.

Carnage

Interesting film. Jodie Foster and Kate Winslet are in it, which is always good. Basically one boy strikes another in the mouth with a stick and their parents meet up to discuss it. What starts off as a civilized discussion soon turns less civilized. Well made and superbly acted.

Unhappy Re: Rate the last film you watched (4)..

Very good.

It's about the McMartin case from the 80's in which a family who ran a daycare center were accused of child molestation by parents, children and the media. They were later proven innocent after a 7 year trial with the children having been manipulated into making false claims.

Makes for a good watch.

The new Poirot one with Branaggjererer - a Hoo-hah in Venice.

I actually kind of liked it. I wasn't a fan of the other two as they just felt so contrived and predictable, but the supernatural element in this one brought something else. 7/10

Brilliant film. If you like good Sci-Fi you'll probably like this.

Has a small undercurrent of the Terminator films IMV.

The Triumph a.k.a The Ron Clark Story

A straight to TV film. Nicely done, based on the true story of Ron Clark. Matthew Perry does a fine job in the lead role. Very similar to Dangerous Minds.
