Default Magpies in my garden

I have a pair of Magpies in my garden building a nest. I have been watching how hard they work and how well they work together. Some people dislike them and i once heard a member of the RSPB on radio say people should smash their eggs if they had the chance. It is not something i could do after watching this hard working pair but i am a softie.

One for sorrow,
Two for joy,
Three for a girl,
Four for a boy,
Five for silver,
Six for gold,
Seven for a tail never to be told.

They can be. We seem to have a pair that come back every year and make a home for themselves in our garden. They attack our cats as a pair, military fashion. Ingenious really, one distracts the cat, while the other tries to sneakily flank it. Crazy.

^ they wake me up dancing about on my roof - that is what comes with living on the top floor flat -- come to think of it I was watcjing one fight with another bird the other day thru my binoculars. I saw a kerfuffle outside in the communal garden and upon looking out I saw a magpie fighting with a pigeon , I dunno who started it tho!

When I was a little girl my Nan told me that if you see one Magpie and salute it that will then cancel out the sorrow, I still do it to this day :embarass:

I ALWAYS salute a magpie - only if I see one on it's own, which is quite often, and have to say 'hello mr. magpie, how's your lady wife??' lol

I must admit I don't mind magpies they are quite striking to look at. There is a lot of superstition about them, which kind of gives them a scary sinister reputation. Obviously I wouldn't like it if one attacked a pet of mine. Though to be true cats do similar (well not peck at the eyes but they might if they had beaks!) cruel things.

I do not think of animals or birds having cruel behaviour it is just how they are. We as humans who are supposedly more intellegent and have moral laws ect however can and do behave in cruel ways. people like to label good and bad dogs a dog is bad if his behaviour does not suit us but good if it does when really he is just behaving like a dog.
