What did your school reports say about you?
Hello I don't post on here much, but I've been around a while, mostly reading......Anyway.....
It's quite a while since i was at school (thank god) as I'm now 34 but over the weekend, I found all my old school reports from secondary school. Reading them bought back the misery of my school days, made me quite angry and depressed, and ended with me ripping them to shreds. Every teacher comments on my shyness, how I'm too quiet, too reserved, can't communicate with others, and the head of year, wrote on one report that I HAVE to find a way of overcoming my shyness, otherwise i will never succeed in life. I remember reading this when i was 11 (11 for gods sake!), and feeling like i was the biggest failiure in the world. How on earth can a cripplingly shy 11 year old find a way of overcoming their shyness? Being constantly told that you're too shy/quiet etc, is a surefire way of making any shy person withdraw even more into themselves. So anyway, this was my experience of school reports. Was wondering what other people's experiences were/are. I actually think part of teacher training should include awareness of social anxiety and how to deal with shy students. |

Re: What did your school reports say about you?
They all said stuff like that. Too quiet, doesn't work w/ others, doesn't participate in class, etc. No one really offered any help though so I just kept getting worse

Re: What did your school reports say about you?
It varied from: "***** is a likeable, friendly and vivacious child."
"***** tends to be too assertive and speaks before she thinks." (I just didn't agree with the teacher) "***** is a gifted child." Ta that helped with my scholarship. TO: "***** really must become more confident and speak up in class." "I can't write a report on ***** because she never attends class." |

Re: What did your school reports say about you?
'Very intelligent, but too lazy' was a recurring theme. Not a direct quote, obviously.

Re: What did your school reports say about you?
Alot of my reports were pretty good. Except when it came to 'very quiet, doesn't work well with others, doesn't participate in class ...etc etc etc'.
Whenever teachers told me I needed to participate in class more (i.e. contributing to class discussions etc), I really did try, but after a while I just gave up in the end, as I just couldn't feel comfortable doing it, and it doesn't really have an impact on your exam grades. |

Re: What did your school reports say about you?
I only really recall slightly and thats mainly from when it being discussed to my face or speaking to parents. Most my grades wernt exactly that good back then considering I wasnt very good at reading or writing lol. I wouldnt of understood all of report, Idk. It would made more sense to discuss it.
Either Thick, quiet, needs to listen more in class, needs spend more time on homework, attitude, lazy, doesnt always do what told. Red pen all over my work constantly essentially destroying it - Informing me on how bad it was and how I needed to write out spelling mistakes correctly hundreds of times. (Never did - As I got older I began to write nasty comments instead and hand it in asking for them to please stop ruining my work.) Amusingly when younger I couldnt always read their comments until I got home and parents told me or asked a friend - Just remember getting really upset when they used to destroy my hard work with red pen. I also recall something along the lines of - I didnt listen to them and so didnt know what I was meant to be doing. Idk - I never listened to those twats. Those were the teachers that kept telling me in class to write out words correctly 100 times or whatever. I always refused. I never went to detentions. My parents told them to fvck off too as I shouldnt have to. Those teachers never liked me and bullied me. To sum that up - I misbehaved and didnt do what I was always told. Or Intelligent, shy, quiet, extremely hard working, very helpful, pleasure to teach and have around. Wish I had more pupils like Barry who tries so hard. The really great teachers - I worked really hard - Used to panic alot to do my best to try and impress them. I was a teacher pet in those classes. They always had the best to say about me. Depended on teacher. - See I never really got good grades with either type teacher compared to other students - However I did work pretty hard using drawings and diagrams and shit instead of so many words to help me explain what I understood. I always tended to understand the work if someone read it to me. So I used drawings and stuff to explain - Really pissed me off when teachers ruined my work because I spent ages on it. Cried once because something I spent WEEKS on making a leaflet thingy or something and when I got it back every damn page - Like 10-15 pages - Had been replaced with loads red pen and multiple times asking me to respell words. **** YOU lol >.> I so pissed off that I replied to every single comment.. with some insult to teacher. Then before going home I handed it in. Got told off pretty bad but then parents came into school and told HER off. Stupid b1tch. Hated that woman. I still got that leaflet somewhere lol. My insults spelled really badly and terrible handwriting lol. ^.^ |

Re: What did your school reports say about you?
Mine were all fairly standard, "Mouse is a quiet but diligent pupil, mouse is conscientious but somewhat reticent in class, Mouse is able but lacks confidence in her own ability", the words "exceptionally talented" appeared a couple of times on my PE report, though this was cancelled out by the "lazy and unwilling to participate" that appeared my Drama report.

Re: What did your school reports say about you?
I got 'conscientious' every single time. Always seemed like a weird word to use. I think I took it to mean quiet but not in a way that interfered with work.

Re: What did your school reports say about you?
Mine was mainly "not interested" "doesnt try", apart from Art and Graphics, which again I didnt try in, but they assumed I did because it was piss easy! My R.E teacher branded me disrespecful for refusing to participate in his class, for throwing a bible at my mate to get his attention and for drawing on my books. He ended up kicking me out the class for year 11 so I had an hour free to do extra art work. Jokes on him though as I still had to do the exam and got a B (how I dont know) and that was with being late because Brazil vs England at the WC was on.

Re: What did your school reports say about you?
Primary school 'bright, hard working, good member of class' etc
High school (when SA kicked in) 'Quiet, could contribute more' 6th form 'Cause for concern, low attendance, seems to be behind' -except for English language which I got 'valuable member of class, doing well which is funny as that was the lesson I skipped most.... |

Re: What did your school reports say about you?
They were all basically the same, along the lines of "Doing very well but we'd like her to contribute more in class". "Pleasure to teach" popped up a few times as well, which is nice.

Always things like "doesn't speak up," "reserved," "quiet," "shy," etc. A lot of teachers hated me because of it.

Re: What did your school reports say about you?
good at maths/science, terrible handwriting, too quiet, needs to improve attendance (I used to pretend to be ill all the time to get out of school, at one point missing a whole term of year 10, I have terrible guilt about lying about it to my parents)

Re: What did your school reports say about you?
-struggles to understand concepts
-quiet and mild mannered.. struggles to understand concepts is because of the anxiety of being in a classroom drastically affected my performance and concentration because of things like mild bullying and i don't like people sitting behind me as i try to concentrate. I must have been very sensitive to that environment, unfortunately it meant that a lot of what was taught to me didn't sink in and i've had to educate myself a fair bit more later in life.. |

Re: What did your school reports say about you?
I was a rebellious little so and so, always in trouble. In retrospect it was my way of making myself feel confident despite the SA, and in later school years, justifying my self imposed avoidance of socialising. Used to get the same sort of report comments as others here "highly capable but does not apply himself" yadda yadda.

Re: What did your school reports say about you?
One teacher said - I was quiet as a mouse.
Another teacher said - I was everything, the only thing lacking was communication. At the end of my 6th form - The only thing my head teacher remember me for and said in front of the whole class was - She was a quiet girl! |

Re: What did your school reports say about you?
I was said to be sullen, morose, disruptive and I that could do a lot better than I was doing. I couldn't care less back then, though. Just getting through the day was good enough for me.

Re: What did your school reports say about you?
My PE teachers loved me.
Everybody else said I was bright with a good sense of humor, yet lazy and unmotivated outside of sport. My mum got a job at my school when I was in my last year, and one of the teachers asked her if I was on drugs because I was so quiet and withdrawn. I've always been quiet, but during my last two years at secondary school I just shut off. |
