Default Amino Acids

Listened to a podcast the other day, where they started talking about Amino Acid supplement therapy to reduce anxiety.

I'd like something natural to lower the anxiety enough to help me make behavioural change, but refuse to take any established "drugs" if I can help it.

Anyone know anything about this and can guide me?

I'm going to find an appropriate consultant and see what I can learn, will let you know and re-post my findings, might take me some time.

I shall await your info. Sounds very interesting. I'm considering seeing a nutritional therapist to see what I may be lacking or intolerant to etc. You get your aminos' from protein, so will be intersting to see in what form these amino-acids come?

Why do you refuse to take 'established drugs'? I'd argue that taking high doses of some amino acids is far more harmful, and additionally, most of the amino acids that actually have a significant effect on anxiety do so by having drug-like effects (phenylalanine, for example, partly metabolises to phenylethylamine aka amphetamine minus a methyl group (alpha-methyl-phenylethylamine, which just makes it less potent and more fragile thus, short-acting unless you take it with an MAOI).

Also, so-called 'nutritional therapists' out there are usually quacks who don't know much about medicine. You're better off doing your own research than giving money to those idiots.

Supplements do have their place, but taking them in lieu of drugs is dumb and if you have really bad anxiety, you won't get much out of them unless you use them to augment drugs.

Personally I like these in combination with my methylphenidate:
- Magnesium (most people are actually deficient especially under stress, you need a good chelated form like glycinate though which is expensive)
- Phenylalanine (or tyrosine when I run out)
- Green tea extract (great for your health in general)
- Fish oil (most people are deficient in this as well)
