Is there a line in a song that sums up your life?
Is there a line or verse in a song that sums up your life or a part of your life (past or present) It can be negative, positive, silly or serious.
Here goes: The Smiths - How Soon is Now 'There's a club, if you'd like to go You could meet somebody who really loves you So you go, and you stand on your own And you leave on your own And you go home And you cry And you want to die The Doors - People are Strange People are strange when you're a stranger Faces look ugly when you're alone Women(or men) seem wicked when you're unwanted Streets are uneven when you're down I better put in a positive one just to equal it out: Journey 'Don't Stop Believing' Don't know the lyrics. I only like sad songs. |

Re: Is there a line in a song that sums up your life?
I couldn't pin it down to one song. It's like each of my favourite songs carry a different fragment of a code. When you assemble all those fragments into something tangible, you get "me". ;o It's not just a lyric either, it could be the tiniest element of sound. A lot of my favourites are instrumentals. Anyway, I don't listen to The Smiths really, so I can't really comment. Sorry. :<

Re: Is there a line in a song that sums up your life?
This isn't the case so much these days (i've made progress) but for a huge number of years, this song would sum up my life (from a male perspective)
"AT SEVENTEEN" By Janis Ian I learned the truth at seventeen That love was meant for beauty queens And high school girls with clear skinned smiles Who married young and then retired The valentines I never knew The Friday night charades of youth Were spent on one more beautiful At seventeen I learned the truth... And those of us with ravaged faces Lacking in the social graces Desperately remained at home Inventing lovers on the phone Who called to say "come dance with me" And murmured vague obscenities It isn't all it seems at seventeen... A brown eyed girl in hand me downs Whose name I never could pronounce Said: "Pity please the ones who serve They only get what they deserve" The rich relationed hometown queen Marries into what she needs With a guarantee of company And haven for the elderly... So remember those who win the game Lose the love they sought to gain In debitures of quality and dubious integrity Their small-town eyes will gape at you In dull surprise when payment due Exceeds accounts received at seventeen... To those of us who knew the pain Of valentines that never came And those whose names were never called When choosing sides for basketball It was long ago and far away the world was younger than today when dreams were all they gave for free to ugly duckling girls like me... We all play the game, and when we dare We cheat ourselves at solitaire Inventing lovers on the phone Repenting other lives unknown That call and say: "Come on, dance with me" And murmur vague obscenities At ugly girls like me, at seventeen... |

Sitting on the dock of the bay - Otis Redding
Sitting in the morning sun I'll be sitting when the evening comes Watching the ships roll in And I watch 'em roll away again Sitting on the dock of the bay Watching the tide roll away I'm just sitting on the dock of the bay Wasting time I left my home in Georgia Headed for the 'Frisco bay 'Cause I had nothin' to live for And look like nothing's gonna come my way So I'm just Sitting on the dock of the bay Watching the tide roll away I'm just sitting on the dock of the bay Wasting time Look like nothing's gonna change Everything still remains the same I can't do what ten people tell me to do So I guess I'll remain the same Sittin' here resting my bones And this loneliness won't leave me alone It's two thousand miles I roamed Just to make this dock my home Now, I'm just Sitting on the dock of the bay Watching the tide roll away I'm just sitting on the dock of the bay Wasting time. |

This is good fun - keep them coming!
"Freebird" If I leave here tomorrow Would you still remember me? For I must be travelling on, now, 'Cause there's too many places I've got to see. But, if I stayed here with you, girl, Things just couldn't be the same. 'Cause I'm as free as a bird now, And this bird you can not change. Lord knows, I can't change. Bye, bye, its been a sweet love. Though this feeling I can't change. But please don't take it badly, 'Cause Lord knows I'm to blame. But, if I stayed here with you girl, Things just couldn't be the same. Cause I'm as free as a bird now, And this bird you'll never change. And this bird you can not change. Lord knows, I can't change. Lord help me, I can't change. |

Holding back the years
Thinking of the fear I've had so long When somebody hears Listen to the fear that's gone Strangled by the wishes of pater Hoping for the arms of mater Get to me the sooner or later Holding back the years Chance for me to escape from all I've known Holding back the tears Cause nothing here has grown I've wasted all my tears Wasted all those years And nothing had the chance to be good Nothing ever could yeah I'll keep holding on I'll keep holding on I'll keep holding on I'll keep holding on So tight I've wasted all my tears Wasted all of those years And nothing had the chance to be good Cause nothing ever could... |

Re: Is there a line in a song that sums up your life?
This is mine. "The Dark is Rising" by Mercury Rev:
I dreamed of you on my farm I dreamed of you in my arms But dreams are always wrong I never dreamed I'd hurt you I never dreamed I'd lose you In my dreams, I'm always strong And now the creek is rising And all my bridges burnt I always dreamed of big crowds Plumes of smoke and high clouds But dreams don't last for long I have my suspicions When the stars are in position All will be revealed But I know that until then Unless the stars surrender All will be concealed And now the snow is falling And all my fences torn I know you need someone And I can hear someone Somewhere in this song I dreamed that I was walking And the two of us were talking Of all life's mysteries But words that flow between friends Winding streams, without end I wanted you to see But it can seem surprising When you find yourself alone And now the dark is rising And a brand new moon is born I always dreamed I'd love you I never dreamed I'd lose you In my dreams, I'm always strong |

The Platters... Oh-oh, yes I'm the great pretender Pretending that I'm doing well My need is such I pretend too much I'm lonely but no one can tell Oh-oh, yes I'm the great pretender Adrift in a world of my own I've played the game but to my real shame You've left me to grieve all alone Too real is this feeling of make belive Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal Yes, I'm the great pretender Just laughin' and gay like a clown I seem to be what I'm not, you see I'm wearing my heart like a crown Pretending that you're still around |

Re: Is there a line in a song that sums up your life?
Pretty much all of the lyrics in this song sum me up!
Been spending so much time underground I guess my eyes adjusted, to the lack of light I got covered in darkness, covered in darkness Hibernating, always waiting for something new Happiness always ended, in the blink of an eye There was no one attending, no one attending It doesn't really matter where it all began All I know, I got covered in darkness, covered in darkness Ever wonder why I never really truly connect Although my eyes are open? I can hold your gaze, but I'm never connected, never connected I am famous for my generosity, they say I am the kindest But it is easier to give than receive love, give than receive love It doesn't really matter where it all began All I know, I was covered in darkness, covered in darkness Turning pages over, run away to nowhere And it's hard to take control When your enemy's old and afraid of you You'll discover that the monster you were running from Is the monster in you Better to hold on to love Better to hold on to love Change will come It doesn't really matter where it all began All I know, I was covered in darkness, covered in darkness It doesn't really matter where it all began Cuz all I know, I was lost, I was lost No, no It doesn't really matter where it all began no no All I know, I was lost, I feel lost Lost, No |

Northern Sky - Nick Drake (though any Nick Drake song would be just as good)
I never felt magic crazy as this I never saw moons knew the meaning of the sea I never held emotion in the palm of my hand Or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree But now you***8217;re here Brighten my northern sky I***8217;ve been a long time that I***8217;m waiting Been a long time that I***8217;m blown I***8217;ve been a long time that I***8217;ve wandered Through the people I have known Oh, if you would and you could Straighten my new mind***8217;s eye Would you love me for my money Would you love me for my head Would you love me through the winter Would you love me ***8216;til I***8217;m dead Oh, if you would and you could Come blow your horn on high I never felt magic crazy as this I never saw moons knew the meaning of the sea I never held emotion in the palm of my hand Or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree But now you***8217;re here Brighten my northern sky |

There are non-Smiths songs which have meaningful lyrics for me. One I listened to recently was 'Don't Give Up' by Peter Gabriel: "I can't take anymore Going to stand on that bridge keep my eyes down below whatever may come and whatever may go, that river's flowing" |

Anyway on with the show...... When I think of those east end lights, muggy nights The curtains drawn in the little room downstairs Prima donna Lord you really should have been there Sitting like a princess perched in her electric chair And it's one more beer and I don't hear you anymore We've all gone crazy lately My friends out there rolling 'round the basement floor And someone saved my life tonight sugar bear You almost had your hooks in me didn't you dear You nearly had me roped and tied Altar-bound, hypnotized Sweet freedom whispered in my ear You're a butterfly And butterflies are free to fly Fly away, high away, bye bye I never realized the passing hours of evening showers A slip noose hanging in my darkest dreams I'm strangled by your haunted social scene Just a pawn out-played by a dominating queen It's four o'clock in the morning Dammit listen to me good I'm sleeping with myself tonight Saved in time, thank God my music's still alive And I would have walked head on into the deep end of the river Clinging to your stocks and bonds Paying your h.p. demands forever They're coming in the morning with a truck to take me home Someone saved my life tonight, someone saved my life tonight Someone saved my life tonight, someone saved my life tonight Someone saved my life tonight So save your strength and run the field you play alone |

Gary Jules - Mad World
Children waiting for the day they feel good Happy birthday, happy birthday And I feel the way that every child should Sit and listen, sit and listen Went to school and I was very nervous No one knew me, no one knew me Hello teacher tell me, what's my lesson? Look right through me, look right through me And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take When people run in circles its a very, very Mad world, mad world, enlarging your world Mad world That part strikes a cord with me. |

Re: Is there a line in a song that sums up your life?
Great songs. I just did a SAUK compilation as a playlist on my ipod.
Anyway, here goes another one The Verve - The drugs don't work All this talk of getting old It's getting me down my love Like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown This time I'm comin' down And I hope you're thinking of me As you lay down on your side Now the drugs don't work They just make you worse But I know I'll see your face again Now the drugs don't work They just make you worse But I know I'll see your face again But I know I'm on a losing streak 'Cause I passed down my old street And if you wanna show, then just let me know And I'll sing in your ear again Now the drugs don't work They just make you worse But I know I'll see your face again 'Cause baby, ooh, if heaven calls, I'm coming, too Just like you said, you leave my life, I'm better off dead All this talk of getting old It's getting me down my love Like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown This time I'm comin' down Now the drugs don't work They just make you worse But I know I'll see your face again 'Cause baby, ooh, if heaven calls, I'm coming, too Just like you said, you leave my life, I'm better off dead But if you wanna show, just let me know And I'll sing in your ear again Now the drugs don't work They just make you worse But I know I'll see your face again Yeah, I know I'll see your face again Yeah, I know I'll see your face again Yeah, I know I'll see your face again Yeah, I know I'll see your face again I'm never going down, I'm never coming down No more, no more, no more, no more, no more I'm never coming down, I'm never going down No more, no more, no more, no more, no more I'm never going down, I'm never coming down No more, no more, no more, no more, no more I'm never coming down, I'm never going down No more, no more, no more, no more, no more |

Great songs everyone. A few I had forgotten and a few I hadn't heard of. I hope this keeps going. I know each song means something different to each person. A lot of people don't listen to the lyrics, they just go for the beat and there is nothing wrong with that. I am just a sucker for the lyrics behind the sound.

Re: Is there a line in a song that sums up your life?
David Bowie - Space Oddity
This is Major Tom to Ground Control I'm stepping through the door And I'm floating in a most peculiar way And the stars look very different today For here Am I sitting in a tin can Far above the world Planet Earth is blue And there's nothing I can do Though I'm past one hundred thousand miles I'm feeling very still And I think my spaceship knows which way to go Tell my wife I love her very much she knows Ground Control to Major Tom Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong Can you hear me, Major Tom? Can you hear me, Major Tom? Can you hear me, Major Tom? Can you.... Here am I floating round my tin can Far above the Moon Planet Earth is blue And there's nothing I can do. Kate Bush – And Dream of Sheep Little light shining Little light will guide them to me My face is all lit up My face is all lit up If they find me racing white horses They'll not take me for a buoy. Let me be weak, let me sleep and Dream Of Sheep. Oh I'll wake up to any sound of engines Every gull a seeking craft I can't keep my eyes open Wish I had my radio I'd tune into some friendly voices. Talking 'bout stupid things I can't be left to my imagination Let me be weak, let me sleep And Dream Of Sheep Ooh, their breath is warm, And they smell like sleep And they say they take me home Like poppies, heavy with seed They take me deeper and deeper. |
