Pointing out that parents, single or otherwise, generally are given enough money to live on if they can't fully support themselves and their families is not bigotry. Hence if someone doesn't have enough to live on, it raises eyebrows. It turns out the problems were down to her benefits getting messed up.

And there are lots of poor people that aren't on benefits. It's really tiresome that there is this assumption that claiming benefits = poor and not claiming benefits = not poor. Some households are brought out of poverty by benefits.

I was taught to “cope” with poverty by extremely affluent, Narcissistic parents. It wasn’t actually helpful to me. What I learnt, was that the world is a hard cruel place where I was used and abandoned and ate carrots and cheese living in a horrible rented room miles from any friendly faces. I had horrible mean neighbours who said my singing sounded like a crow. A holes

^^ Also for a lot of people it's not one thing or the other, they're working but don't earn enough make ends meet so have to rely on in work benefits too.

Just had a power cut, has been a long time since the last. Luckily it only lasted 10 mins.

Mum said shes going to start paying back the money she owes in December, which is the first sensible thing she's said in a while.

Just found out my neighbour sold his house and is moving out in a few months, so that's great news.

Seems to be working still in 2019 in the UK, although replace "white man" with "person" and "colored man" with unemployed, disabled, mentally ill, poor, etc
Seems to be the way nowadays doesn't it.

Aah, I see! They look odd but yeah very comfy too. Can't you just get trouser that go to your ankles but exact design of them? And they'd be comfier!!

I actually have no idea what to wear nowadays I don't really have enough money to buy enough clothes to wear things that look ok when put together, which is why I look like a bag lady.
Some people must spend fortunes on clothes. I hardly buy any and nothing seems to match or fit together. I think I always dressed like this, but when you're young it's seen as quirky, in middle age it just looks weird.

I need a midults makover
Business idea with potential right there, Melangella!
I barely buy clothes like. If I do it is from a charity shop haha
I remember seeing photos on, was it your twitter or something? You did have a link public didn't you or have I been a creep ? Lol

Ah feck it, just wear what you want, man!

Yes, I am working on this myself. I think this is common in midlife women, it's a definite thing. I even vaguely remember my mum going on loads of shopping trips with a friend of hers in her late 30s trying to spruce herself up with mixed results. I think some people do spend fortunes on clothes and it's a hobby for them. I think other people learned to dress at a young age and have been honing this skill since so can do it on less. And other people go around wearing the same thing all the time or looking like a bag lady!

As for me I never got good at makeup. And I've got to the age where I have to wear it.

I went shopping this morning and while I was stood there looking at something someone shouted my name from behind. When I turned around it was just some guy I met on Tinder a while ago. He shouted "How are you?" while still walking away and then went around the corner before I could even answer

@ limey - How has your first day at the new place been?

I'm thinking how everything feels so pointless at the moment. It's hardly worth me existing for all the use I am. Without any purpose, my life is starting to feel so boring and narrow and empty

I managed to catch up on a bit of sleep earlier and feel slightly less tired than usual but I've noticed those old depressive feelings creeping back in today. Maybe when I haven't slept at all I'm just too exhausted to even feel depressed.

Also, after receiving a letter from the GP that he wants to see me regarding the medi checks blood test results I've now been told that there are no Doctors appointments available until September. I GIVE UP

^ I agree, the GP might be able to do something, especially if they've specifically said they want to see you about it.

Thanks folks; I think you may have misunderstood me - I'm studying from home to gain an IT certification (I actually have it already but it's 10 years out of date) while doing my usual job in the meantime. The course I am doing guarantees an IT job at the end or your money back

I will get a new job and change career through sheer force of willpower!

Consolida - you are very far from useless! Hope you feel better soon.

.... no doctors appointments available until September. Imo that is utterly ridiculous. I’ve been told by receptionists there are no appointments, or I’d have to consult an unknown GP...(I’ve had some horrendous experiences with previously unknown GP’s ).... sometimes it may take getting a bit fierce with these people to receive any sort of service that they are supposed to give. I hope you manage to make an appointment with the GP, Consolida, or another GP who isn’t too awful...

I suppose I was lucky I guess with my shoulder that I got a same day appointment. I said the magic words 'im in pain' and that seemed to get the receptionists attention.

Have you said the doctors written to you about making an appointment? - that sometimes jogs them on a bit.
