Re: Your top 5 music concerts ?
Oh God I don't think I can do just 5 but I'll give it a shot
1. Both nights of Jeff Mangum at The Union Chapel in London, March this year. 2. Death Grips at Islington Mill in Manchester, September 2011. So raw and harsh, seeing them twice next month (Manchester and London) so hoping It's just as good. Stood in front of the camera for all of the video below doing some crazy things with my hand like I'm possessed 3. Aidan Moffat + Malcolm Middleton at the Castle Hotel in Manchester, March 2011. Both guys were in my favourite group Arab Strap which sadly called it quits in 2006. Have never got over the fact that I missed Arab Strap live but seeing both of them play solo was fantastic. Also got photos and chatted with them both before and after the show. 4. Wooden Shjips with Gnod supporting at Islington Mill, Manchester, August 2009. My favourite Manchester group Gnod supporting the San Fransico psych-rockers Wooden Shjips. Many beers were drank and much dancing was had 5. Sunn O))) at Islington Mill, Manchester, December 2009. Every bone in my body was shaking, so loud and the vibrations were huge. Don't think a gig has ever made me that tense before, bloody brilliant! |

Re: Your top 5 music concerts ?
Only a Top 5?? (and not including DJ sets) I am going to struggle and no doubt fail. I guess I've been lucky, I've only been to a couple of bad gigs over the years.
1.Spearhead - King Tut's Wah Wah Hut - Glasgow 1995. Had seen them in '94 in the same venue but it was just before the album had be released, so no one knew any of the material - the return gig in '95, Tuts was completely packed and the gig was simply amazing and hence forth was the bench mark that all further gigs were measured. Had high hopes for Spearhead, the first album was great and going by Michael Franti's previous output in The Disposable Heroes. It was not to be, sadly the following albums were pretty poor. 2.Massive Attack - The Arches Glasgow 1994 The full original line up, things were never quite the same after Mushroom left. 3.Sigur Rós - Carling Academy Glasgow 2008 4.Nine Inch Nails - Barrowlands Glasgow 2005 5.Public Enemy - Barrowlands Glasgow 1995 Edited * |

Re: Your top 5 music concerts ?
Cowburn, I really like your descriptions of your fave gigs. I am really going to have to work on my agoraphobia type problems for when Jeff Mangum returns to these shores, I really am.
Some of my faves from 'back in the day'.. Sonic Youth in London in '88- they were really noisy and overdid the strobe lights which had quite a strange effect on me- in a good way Dinosaur jr at around the same time- you could tell J and Lou hated each other but that just seemed to make it even better. Lou played his weird tape loop noises during every song which was excellent but you could tell that J didn't really want him to. They both seemed to be suffering from fairly bad s.a. type problems and as it was a really small venue they had to walk through the crowd to get on stage- they both sounded really awkward saying 'excuse me, can I get past' to the fans. It was excellent having guitar heroes who were just as socially inept as me. Bert Jansch in 93- wonderful folk guitarist at a really small venue in Brighton so he didn't have to be amplified. Wedding Present in 86 in London as I was only 15 and my first ever gig and involved bunking off school and meeting up with a penpal who I had met through nme personal ads- at the time it was probably the most exciting thing that had ever happened to me and I loved their noisy guitars People I would like to see live: Scott Walker but I think Scott's too s.a. to ever play live again. And Jeff Mangum, love the video. |

Re: Your top 5 music concerts ?
Mount Eerie at the Scala was probably the most wonderful gig i've been to. Loud-quiet-loud-quiet music. I like the surprises. There'd be something bare and delicate, with delicious lyrics, and then suddenly layers of crashing noise, so loud it's humming through your body. And the guy behind it all is adorably humble about being a bit of a genius.
65daysofstatic at Dingwalls I really loved too. They were playing one of their last songs, building up to some blowout noise, and then there was a powercut, and it was all hot and dark and everyone was confused about whether that was the end. And then it got a bit happily riotous, and it felt great that it ended there, like the music had built up to such a point that it tripped out the power in the whole street. I'd have to think some more about the others.. Stanley Brinks maybe. He was really cool, his songs poked at my little blackened heart. And Fever Ray too. I love it when the whole floor shudders with the bass. And there were these lights, laser beams and some higglety-pigglety lampshades that pulsed on and off, it felt kind of electric being there. And her beautifully creepy voice came from a shadowy figure disguised in an insanely strange costume on a dark stage. I like that kind of weird. Ah and i'm a bit nostalgic about some gigs I went to as a teenager. But not so much for the music itself, more for the happiness. |

Re: Your top 5 music concerts ?
I'm not sure I can come up with 5 but my favourite gig was Lostprophets back in 2004 supported by Avenged Sevenfold and the Bronx. I was mad crazy about all 3 at the time and remember it being the best thing ever.
