I bet that was a bit of a emotional ride. Did you have long to wait between losing and reuniting? Do you normally keep him on a lead? Was it a hit-and-run?

When I'm in the woods Spud, I don't bother with the lead beause it usually walks near me. When he has his stick, he sometimes lies on the side of the footpath with it then follows. Tonight he did that whilst I put the poo bags in the bin and when I turned around he was no where to be seen.
I still have no idea what made him move. Could have chased something, I don't know. He didn't respond to my calls or anything.

I think I was looking for him for about two hours in the woods before my friend decided to post it on a local facebook group and she was informed that my dog had been taking to a vets!
Could have been a lot worse like but he seems in shock, bless him!
Still a bit stressed about it myself like but got to think myself lucky.

Thank you Galatea the vet says there wasn't anything too serious that concerned from what she found whilst examining him! He is limping. He is swollen around his right eye and he has a few grazes on his legs.

I just couldn't believe how quickly he disappeared. And still can't understand why he didn't respond to my calls! He has been lucky like because on the road he was found, the cars go flying down there.

Nevermind! Just got to take it on the chin I suppose and be extra cautious from now on.

Yeah, i know what it's like to have the dog off lead, it's great, and it seems natural etc. but when they go proper off off lead it's panic stations. I once had a situation walking along the coast, on top of a mixture of slabs of rock - they were arranged in a rough way but essentially formed a barrier against the tide - anyway, my dog got spooked about something and made a runner for the nearest crevice. I can't remember properly, but i managed to grab her back legs before she become unreachable. Honestly, i know her well enough (stubborn af), and i know i would've been waiting there for a long, long time before she decided to emerge, if she did, and i don't know how she would've reacted once the tide started coming in. My biggest concern was how far she'd have gone in the labyrinth of cracks and crevices underneath if she had gotten free.

So, yeah, be cautious. Maybe get a retractible lead? Dog whistle? Hope he's back to better health tomorrow

The meet went well, thanks Dimplesxo It was lovely to meet up again with an old friend.

Gosh, that's a late night/early morning walk you went on! If I went for a walk at that time around here I'd be lucky not to get mugged

Thanks newbs It went really well. We met up for a coffee and a bit of lunch. We spent a good few hours chatting away and just generally catching up. I was very nervous beforehand (and so was she) but then within minutes it was as if we had only seen each other yesterday not 2 years ago. We've been friends for years and years now, infact I met her through SAUK originally

@ Deer That must have been terrifying for you when your dog suddenly took off like that. Sounds like he had a lucky escape. I'm so glad to hear that, despite a few minor injuries, he is going to make a full recovery.

That's it Spud. The not knowing how to predict what they will do, or where they will go next is the unsettling part.I
He has never done this before so I was completely caught off guard.

Well, looks like I won't be getting much sleep tonight. Still feel a bit wired!

Aye consolida. Just one of them WTF moments. I couldn't wrap my head around how I had ended up losing him. Just took me by complete surprise.
YEah, seems like he has trouble putting any weight on one of his rear legs so I think he is going to need a good few days before he can start walking normally.

Oh no, not a huge fan of retractable leads. Seem to encourage dogs to pull! I just need to make sure he doesn't move out of my field of vision anymore and not allow him to move away from my side.

HAha! I felt a bit like that guy last night, running through the woods shouting.

I've done a Fenton before - running after a dog you're never gonna catch whilst wearing wellies, people watching on ... the shame

This is why you don't drink, remember that

I should say my dog was chasing after a herd of sheep. I wasn't chasing her for the fun of it.

Haha exactly! Just the fact I no longer wake up wondering what the hell I have done the night before is enough now to keep my lips away from the devilish liquid!

Lmao! I'm starting to think me and you aren't cut out to be dog owners lol

You'd think they could come up with something a little less shrill. Or maybe that's the plan - to make ppl hang up before there eardrums are tortured to death.

^ I'd sign!

I upload my pictures to village photos http://village.photos then copy the the picture url/address.

Once you've done that click on insert image icon on here (the yellow and grey box with a little picture of a landscape inside) and paste the image/picture url/address in. Then post.

Sorry I'm not very good at describing these things! There's also info on the forum here:http://www.social-anxiety-community....read.php?t=707

There are a lot of different image hosting sites, village photo is quite easy though and free.

Thanks, Mo.

I think it's finally clearing actually. I've had this horrible head congestion, somewhere up between my eyes. I won't go into the symptoms but it feels like it's not there anymore

Maybe it'll come back tomorrow morning but i'm feeling fairly normal right now.
