Good news about my hearing
I'd noticed I could hardly hear my stepdaughter on the phone .Checked and hearing in left ear was dulled.
Stepdaughter went with me for me to see the nurse. Good news. Both ears were checked. There's a build up of wax in the left ear. The solution? Olive oil. May take a week or two , with the hearing perhaps getting worse before it gets better . |

They don't do syringing anymore.

Good luck with the Olive oil Firemonkey
I assume it's not the same oil as the one you might use in cooking! Tonkin, I had one of my ears syringed once and it wasn't a pleasant experience - felt like my brain was being sucked out - possibly because I hadn't been told to soften the wax beforehand. However, it was good to able to hear again afterwards |

Re: Good news about my hearing
^ Well the nurse said to get the cheap,ie not extra virgin, olive oil from Sainsburys.

^ I also thought for a moment this thread was about some sort of legal hearing!
I've heard that syringing isn't done on the NHS anymore but there is a service where someone will come to your house and sort of wash out your ears, it's pricey though! |

Re: Good news about my hearing
Olive oil didn't work for me. If anything it made it worse. I was shovelling it into my ears for weeks, months on end!

It was a nurse that I saw. My stepdaughter said I wouldn't be able to put the olive oil in my ear, so she'd have to do it. |

Re: Good news about my hearing
I have to get mine syringed quite often. Olive oil first to soften it for a couple of weeks and then see the nurse.
I didn't know they had stopped that on the NHS and I must be due for another rodding out soon. This is the creeping privatization of the NHS no doubt. Does anyone have the number for Dyno-Rod? |

Re: Good news about my hearing
The District Nurse does this now. You don't get them syringed they use a machine that pumps water in like the syringe.
I get mine done now and again, but as I wear hearing aids I get more problems with wax, as it can only fall out on it's own for 8 hours a day, when I'm asleep. If Firemonkeys doesn't improve they will probably syringe them, if it doesn't come out of it's own accord. |

^ The water pumping sounds more gentle that syringing, but it should be available on the NHS, people's hearing is important!

Re: Good news about my hearing
My stepdaughter put the first lot in this afternoon . I've now got an itchy ear that feels like something is trickling inside it.

Re: Good news about my hearing
The last time my ears needed de-waxing, I decided to try out Microsuction, which I had heard good things about. Unfortunately it is only available at private clinics (I think) and costs a few quid, but I booked a same day appointment and they cleared my ears straightaway with a tiny vacuum cleaner, which made me very happy.
I sympathise with you, firemonkey. I've been down the olive oil route many times and it is such a nuisance having to spend days and days with your ears all gunked up before they finally allow you in for treatment. Hope it all went well though. |

Re: Good news about my hearing
The olive oil isn't working ie no waxy gunk is coming out . My stepdaughter has to put it in my ear , and she's not here everyday. Perhaps that's the reason why,or perhaps not .

Re: Good news about my hearing
My left ear made a funny noise about 15 minutes , and now my hearing in it is much better.

Re: Good news about my hearing
I think (can't be certain) that the wax may have just shifted a little . For about 2 minutes just after I got up my hearing was dull again, then it was back to being OK again.

That's good to hear
Sounds like the oil may have finally done the trick. Hope your ear stays unblocked |

Re: Good news about my hearing
For those going down the olive oil route, make sure the oil is warm (not hot), then plug the ear with cotton wool. Because the oil cools, this will need to be repeated during the day. The warm oil softens the wax, and it should eventually come out. I've had to do this a few times in my life, and it does work quite well.
