Default Christmas is meaningless

Means nothing now.

I'm glad for the few days off work but that's it.
This is just a thread to moan about it , we can be miserable together.
Anyone else?

Who are these annoying people that get excited about it anyway? Children I can probably understand but adults....ppfftt .

One thing that annoys me is that some people in this world seem to measure time in 'sleeps'

'only 4 more sleeps now...'. Oh F**k off!
And that friggin Leona Lewis song .....

All the effort and hassle....why?

And then after Christmas you've still got to look forward to about 2 more months of darkness and shitty weather.

I love Christmas, but I'm rage-sistering with you on the use of:

X amount of sleeps
and
X amount of get-ups

biscuits! Are you zen now?
I don't remember you as a negative person at all, but on the rare occasions I login here, I always see you as a super positive zen master guru

Even now that I have a family, I still don't like Christmas. There is progress though - it changed from "most depressed time of the year" to the "I don't care time of the year".

But I would love to hear your story of how you became so cool! Or were you always like this?

Christmas is mostly a time to buy too much, eat too much and drink too much. Your typical consumer fest.

The best day is the 22nd, the shortest day. Soon be spring.

^ sometimes it's a jolty feeling that Christmas brings. Also being comfortable with being on your own most of the year and then suddenly being around more people can bring on feelings of loneliness as well. It's an interesting phenomenon how arbitrary cut off points can cause panic and negative self-reflection, but it naturally happens because everything is about others asking what plans you have, reflecting on the year, and resolutions etc.

Aw that's sweet, Boyo! If zen means an anxious ball of mess, then yes.

I've put this in a spoil because I don't want to break up the idea of the thread as being a space to vent!

How old is your little one now? (please don't worry if you'd prefer not to say)

Maybe its meaning has changed but we don’t really want to be upfront about it. Even if it’s meaningless, holidays or breaks from routine is probably healthy for the human psychology.

We have removed other things that we thought was meaningless only to find that they actually helped regulate our mental health day to day.

I think Christmas magnifies lonely feelings for a lot of people because the media portrays a perfect family Xmas via TV adverts and shops etc.
Christmas does have a meaning. Jesus was born on 25th December but many people dont understand what they are celebrating!
I remember awkward conversations at work with people asking me what Im doing and often it would be very little ( my preferred choice) and having to make things up to avoid being patronised!
Ultimately though its only one day a year.

^ even the bible doesn't claim that Jesus was born on the 25th of December, I'm afraid!
Sorry for the pedantry. As you were

^ I think the date was originally stolen from Pagan winter celebrations, much as Easter was a rejigging of Pagan Spring celebrations.
Kind of..."well everyone already has a feast around then, we should make it a Christian thing."
I just think of it as a celebration of warmth, company and food during the winter, which I expect it started as.
Though I do like Christmas carols.

Good thing about the meaninglessness of the season is you can impose your own meaning on it, such as 'What a good time of year to slip Merritt a tenner over Paypal,' or perhaps even 'You know what, I could stretch to twenty, he's been a very good boy after all'. These are but two humble suggestions.

It must have been annoying being born on Christmas Day, I bet his friends/disciples were always too busy to go out on his birthday.

Wasn't Jesus actually born in the summer? I wonder who's idea it was to co-opt Yule from the Pagans and call it "Christmas"....

Christmas kind of lost it's gloss for me when my Brother told me that Father Christmas didn't exist on Christmas Eve. I was 32 at the time, but still. Although I kind of guessed the year before that he didn't exist. The main clue was seeing my parents carrying the presents from the car. But of course my Sherlock Chess skills weren't as great back then.

I think I'm actually pretty into Christmas - and I'm a champagne nihilist. I like getting creative with the logistics, doing things with family and the twinkley lights. The 'Christ' part is basically irrelevant to me though - I could be celebrating the birth of PornHub for all I care (logs on the fire, buttplugs on the tree etc.).

Oh Almighty One!

We give praise to your plentiful bounty of filth!

Now let us all rejoice in the glory of the fluffers and the spit roasters. For they are truly blessed!

Amen.

Decaf is where it's at!

For me, the most valuable thing about it is getting time away from work,
But for many it's probably all about family etc.

It's obviously an old celebration festival type thing from our distant past,
It's understandable that in the darkest days of the year and the most miserable weather, that people got together to cheer each other up in the dark months and exchanged gifts, food and company just to get through the harshest days of winter,
I think it has a purpose, serves a purpose.

But, unless you are a people person, it can be stressful and very exhausting running the gauntlet of enforced socialising

I usually need another holiday after this "holiday"
