I tried snipping the joiney-bits with scissors but failed just ended up with a very dented bottle top. Then I tried a knife with a serrated edge but that didn't work either. Bad times.

Blocked vent holes/filter causing not enough air flowing over the elements. The are usually removable to clean. The elements will blow if ya don't clean it. Try a vaccum cleaner hose on the vent holes/filter.
