I went to a private cognitive behavioural therapist a few years back. I didn't find him very useful because he spent the whole session asking me how to spell the list of drugs I've had problems with even though he stated "substance abuse" as one of his specialities. I think he was a bit of a Jack of all trades though, cos he claimed to be qualified to do all kinds of therapies.

In principle though, I think it's probably the most useful kind of therapy there is because it's about doing things to help you move forward, rather than sitting dwelling on the past.

I'll be starting CBT in a few weeks. I'm really hoping that this is the thing that's going to help me get rid of my SA. I've tried doing things on my own for many years but obviously none of them helped.

Yes, not much use to be honest...in fact useless. I had 16 sessions and really got nowhere. I think it takes years and years to have any effect. Only seroxat ever worked on my SA.

Absolutely useless for me lol

I have tried an online course, I have had CBT with a Psychologist. I have been to an anxiety based CBT group...

None of them were any good...

I already know how my thoughts work and why i think the way I do... knowing doesn't automatically mean you can change it...

maybe for some it does, but not me...

Sorry for such a negative response, but that is the honest truth of it for me I am afraid

I kinda chickened out on the whole cbt thing as soon as the asessment was over lol.

I've heard from a few family members that its not very effective but what works for some people may not work for others.

I hear a lot of people on boards say that the thing that helped them the most with anxiety was CBT.

I guess it depends on whether your anxiety is due to a chemical imbalance in the brain (in which case probably only drugs will work), or whether it's just psychological.
