How did your parents meet?
It's a topic that I always find interesting. I like to imagine that everyone's parents have a happy story attached to it, but that's not life of course. My parents met at the cinema. Where my Mum was supposed to meet her friend there, but she didn't show up. Then my Dad and his friend sat behind my Mum's chair. Where my Dad asked my Mum if the empty chair was taken. My Mum said it was. Although it wasn't, but still. At which point, my Dad said excuse me please and sat himself next to my Mum. I wouldn't have done it myself. It's not me. Although they were both teenagers and It was the 60s. I don't know. Whereas I get overly apologetic if I accidentally bump into someone. My Dad also went the extra mile that night. Where he asked his friend to walk my Mum back home. This friend also tried to give my Mum a goodnight kiss, but she respectfully declined. It was only years later that my Dad said to my Mum that if she had kissed his friend, then he wouldn't have seen her again. Although don't get me wrong, my Dad was great! They had a long and happy marriage. It's just interesting to think that if my Mum had failed my Dad's quality control check, then I wouldn't be typing this right now. While also wearing my pot noodle stained t shirt!

Re: How did your parents meet?
Hi Biscuit! Hi Jam!
Thanks for stopping by guys! Hopefully Dougie, Genovese and TD,P will be along soon!!! Then the core group will be complete! But in all seriousness, I've been reading some of my previous posts and I didn't realise just how much I was in persona mode! As you know, I've been building up to doing the Rubber Chicken Thread for a while. And basically I haven't switched that mode off yet Although before I continue with that thought. I just want to speak to someone: Seagull?????? Thanks for flying in I didn't want to intrude on Spidey's thread again. So I thought we could have a chat here About Spidey. I'm a huge fan of her posts. She kind of reminds me of Rebka's posts. Who to me was like the holy grail of creativity! I was in awe of her posts and Spidey reminds me of that style of posting. So I certainly hope that no breakage has occurred Also Can you do me a favour please. Can you fly to The Rubber Chicken Barn thread for me please. And do a 5 minute stand up set for the forum . I really appreciate it Anyway, safe flying Seagull! I'm sorry about that guys. So like I was saying. I'm still in full persona mode and I think when it comes to a thread like this. It's entirely possible that other members might be wondering whether they should share their story. Which I completely understand. So worst case scenario, if this thread isn't someones cup of tea, then maybe we can turn it into another Rubber Chicken Barn. I'm thinking maybe a possible franchise Anyway, thanks again for stopping by guys! I love you both! |

Re: How did your parents meet?
My parents met at their workplace which at that time was a very posh department store in London. Although they were young they were both living and working away from home. My mum was from Kent and my dad from Cheshire. They lived in accommodation that came with the job and everything was extremely proper and above board. The female employees and the male employees lived in separate accommodation and weren't allowed to cross the threshold of the other even if - as in my parents case - they were engaged. My mum was 21 when she married my dad which seems so young to me but things were very different in the 1950's.
Edit, I just remembered my mum telling me that a girl was sacked from the department store because she was pregnant and unmarried. Can you imagine that happening now?! Thank god we've moved on. |

Re: How did your parents meet?
It's a question I've never asked, but am curious. My parents are not very close in that way, they're incompatible for each other, so it'll be awkward for me to bring it up.

Re: How did your parents meet?
They were on the same course at university, but got to know each other through some drama club they were both in. It's not really an interesting story, but it's nice that because of that they have lots of photos of the early part of their relationship.

Re: How did your parents meet?
My parents went to the same school but weren't in the same year so didn't properly meet until a bit later through mutual friends I think. Either way they're now divorced.

Re: How did your parents meet?
My mum moved over to the UK to be a nanny. Then she worked in a hotel in London. My Dad used to drive a lorry to the hotel to collect the dirty sheets etc. one of my mum’s work friends told my dad to ask out my mum. He did as he was told.
I love looking at the old photos of them together. They were so good looking and stylish. |

Re: How did your parents meet?
My mum told me when I was in my early 20's that she met my dad through a dating agency (this was the 70's) and I was never to tell my dad that I knew this!
I think they met as a group or double date? - not sure - but my mum when they met didn't like him |

Re: How did your parents meet?
They met in a singles club for dating. They both married the wrong person though. I guess sometimes in life people go for the closest approximation person that will help meet their ideals. And in the olden days that was to have a family, settle down. Both my parents wanted kids.

Re: How did your parents meet?
At a dance my dad and his mate both met their wives.
All four went back to my grans house. Gran apparently walked into the room asked which one was my dad's looked my mum up and down and then left the room. They got divorced 30+ years ago. Maybe my gran was right. |

Re: How did your parents meet?
I believe that they first started talking to each other on the CB radio, back when those were a fad in the 80s.

Re: How did your parents meet?
It's boring. They met briefly at an event, then ran into each other some time later on the Tube when they were both single. Its typical of both of them to be like, 'I know that person from somewhere, I shall go and speak to them', whereas I'm likely to skulk and hope they dont recognise me, in spite of being set this example. At one time I was worried my dad was approaching strange women on the tube, but that wasn't the case.
My favourite family story though is of my great-uncle trying to pick up a gentleman in a London park. His opening gambit was, 'Are you foreign?' Love it. They got chatting and my great-uncle asked him home to tea. He lived with his sister, and the foreign gentleman ended up marrying the my great-aunt. |

At a dance, which is weird cos I never saw either of them dance.
I think that's how most people met then (late 50's) |
