Default CBT

I have decided to have a course of CBT. I will be paying for it myself and I have alteady spoken to the therapist on the phone. She sounded really nice and I feel optimistic that this will make a change.

It feels good to finally acknowledge that I have a problerm and be seeking help for it.

Hi Sunset, good move!

I was the same as you, very reluctant to try CBT and now finally after years of uncertainty I've started doing CBT and got my 5th session tomorrow, I think it's been very helpful, very insightful and nice to be able to talk to someone who actually understands what you're on about!

Good luck!

well done on making that decision - I hope it helps

Do you mind me asking what its going to cost you? I've just finished my second course on the NHS and the last was short and not very rewarding for me in my opinion - interested to find out if its worth seeking someone to do it privately

Started CBT myself yesterday after months and months of waiting. Good first session - getting it free through the NHS too. Fingers crossed I'll make progress over the coming weeks & months...

CBT is great. Do the thought countering TEA forms in the CBT book by Sam Obitz dauily and you will be feeling a lot better in a matter of months and even better after that.

Didn't help me at all, theipist said I needed something more long term than 12 seasions.
My advice is to put in 100% effort and listen to self help tapes first so you at least have a idea and can put things in to practise in a shorter space of time.

You MUST put 100% effort into your treatment to get results. Whether it is CBT and the TEA forms or any other form of treatment. The real work that helps you get better is done outside of your sessions

I totally agree with this. It is not easy and I had my struggles but those struggles are what got me where I am today feeling great

My early struggles were handsomely rewarded with years (and hopefully many more going forward) of feeling great and minimal what I call abnormal or bad anxiety. I hope you are continuing to use your TEA forms and feeling well mayo

Although not a total substitute to face-to-face therapy, I found the following two books most helpful to follow:

Managing Social Anxiety- A conitive Behavioural Approach workbook by Debra A Hope, Richard G Heimberg and Cynthia Turk.

Overcoming social anxiety and shyness by Gillian Butler.

Those sound like good books. My favorite cbt book is (not coincidentally the one that helped me) Been there, done that? DO This! by sam obitz & Michelle Craske

Ditto, my favorite self help book too. The TEA forms are so helpful if you work at them.
I'm doing great Herb, how are you? I hope you are feeling as good as I am because I am loving life these days

I hear you, but I do like the changing colors of the leaves Fall brings.

Nice to read these positive successes with CBT.

I have had CBT on several occasions, from private to group work, and like everything else I've tried, it hasn't helped.

However, I still believe totally in CBT and view it as a fairly groundbreaking therapy. I think I have been very emotionally immature and not ready during the times I have tried it, and I have needed to sort out many issues in a private talk-based therapy first. Maybe I will give it another go soon in the future.

Totally agree with this, it's better to understand the CBT process and beforehand so that the therapist can help you execute the strategies.

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Good for you for keeping an open mind! CBT takes a lot of self-discipline but has been the best investment into myself I have ever made. I hope you find something whether CBT or not that helps you!
