What’s the first song you remember hearing as a kid?
I was thinking today about my earliest childhood memories, and realized that one of the first things I can recall is hearing a particular song. It was ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’ by The Buggles (which I still love! )! I checked and apparently it reached No. 1 in the UK in October 1979, so I would have been four years old (Wonder what it would be nowadays…Xbox thingy killed the Blu-ray whatsit…? )
I wondered what is the earliest song any of you can remember hearing? And what memories (if any) you associate with it? |

Seasons in the Sun by Terry Jacks. It was released in 1974 when I was only three, so I don't know if I remember it from that age, or if it was just played on the radio a lot when I was a bit older.
It was sad, and made me cry (it still does :embarass |

I remember Nancy Sinatra singing 'these boots were made for walking'. If anyone else sang it I would get really annoyed with them because I considered it my song. I can remember shouting angrily at people (I had a stutter too!) whenever they sang it, I was about 2.

Can't remember the first song, but can remember once being asked if I preferred The Brotherhood of Man or Abba and it was the Brotherhood of Man for me!
I remember the girl next door had a poster of The Bay City Rollers on her bedroom wall and her brother once tried to get me headbanging to Staus Quo's "What your proposin'" not very successfully. |

I vaguely remember 'Michelle' by the Beatles, but I had no idea who they were. Must have been about four.
Hate the Beatles, incidentally, but love John Lennon. |

I'm not sure about the first.. Mum used to sing a donovan song "yellow is the colour of my true love's hair in the morning..." or something...
Also Pink Floyd with "Another brick in the Wall" was one of the albums my dad had when I was little. |

The happy wanderer. Don't know who sang it, but I loved it. I can even sing most of the words even now. It must at least 25 years since I last heard it.

One that stands out is Sailing by Rod Stewart in 1975. Heard it on the radio and liked it and my mum bought it for me on 7" vinyl
Probably the earliest was when I used to dance around the room to the tune called Popcorn in 1972. |

"Bits and Pieces" by the Dave Clark Five - don't know the year exactly but it must have been around 1964/65. It just stood out as a good stomping tune with a solid beat.

I don't remember it myself, but my mum tells me that when I was very young I used to get excited whenever Gary Glitter appeared on Top Of The Pops...
The first song that really had an effect on me was 'Hanging On The Telephone' by Blondie, when a freind played it to me back in about 1979. |

They used to play Puff the Magic Dragon by Peter Paul & Mary when I was in play group aged ~4 though the song was older I think (1960s?). The first track I really liked was Fanfare For The Common Man by Emmerson Lake & Palmer
(I've no idea whether that vid is any good since I can't view flash atm ) |
