Net curtains?
Do you have net curtains?
We always had them in our living room growing up then one day my mum took them down I hated going in that room after that. We've got them and I think all windows should have them. |

Re: Net curtains?
Yeah I hate going into a room without net curtains too. It gives me a sense of uncurtainty.

Re: Net curtains?
Yes, when you live in a downstairs flat you really have to.
My Mum never had net curtains in her house when we were growing up, and she still doesn't now. It's so weird when people can stare right at you through the window! |

Re: Net curtains?
Growing up in the 80s it was mandatory to have net curtains on my street. Whereas now everyone seems to have modern blinds. Including myself. Idk, it might be the nostalgia typing, but I miss the days when I used to see a row of curtains twitching. And the best twitchers of them all were my neighbours Rita and John. Then one day we got burgled and Rita and John gave us a blow by blow account of what they saw:
Rita: I was saying to John, that seems strange that 2 men are carrying out your TV and figurines. My neighbors said they wanted to talk to me about my bad home security habits. So I said “Sure, my door is always open.” |

Re: Net curtains?
People with no net curtains or just blinds that they leave open can go **** themselves.
How stable, balanced & calm a human being do you have to be to sit in your front room and have anyone and everyone walking past able to see right in. Even at night when they turn the lights on! Either they're the oddballs for being able to live such a life or I'm the oddball finding that lifestyle beyond alien Oddballs! |

Re: Net curtains?
I don't have any, I think they look awful. You can't see into my house from outside anyway, but I close the curtains at night when I turn the lights on. If I lived somewhere at risk of people looking inside I'd probably just get vertical blinds.

Re: Net curtains?
I have no real reason to open the (non-net) curtains on the road side anyway.
The one bedroom I keep them closed mostly, because I'm typically changing or sleeping in there. The other is an office where I like being able to look more than six feet away even if it means that people could see in (they'd just see the top of my head above a monitor, mostly, but it's not a ground floor window anyway so they'd probably just see my ceiling) The lounge on the other side overlooks a railway, but you can't see much from the train whizzing past. Maybe the neighbours in the garden downstairs can see in so I'd keep my curtains closed sometimes if they are outside but they don't use the garden so much. |

Re: Net curtains?
^when we had a top floor flat(3rd floor) I covered the kitchen and living room windows with reflective film. Partly cos the sun shine made the flat 40 degrees and also cos there was another block directly opposite so it always felt like they were looking in.

The only thing opposite me that can see in (sort of) is the Travelodge hotel.

Re: Net curtains?
Yes, only in the living room as it's quite open at the front.
We have a big living room window and across the road is a nice view, but the actual road is quite near the house and is on a popular country walk. I didn't mind at first, our last home was a cottage on the canal and I was used to a lot of people (and canal barges) going past, mainly people don't look in. But at this house there is a guy who lives a few doors down, and he used to own a little garage further up the road, so walked past the house several times a day and he always stared in. Whenever I would sit down for lunch he seemed to go past (I imagine going home for his own lunch) and he always looks in and waves to the man next door, his bff, and he started to catch my eye and wave....while I was sitting in my own home! It was too weird and I got voile curtains about a week later. It's much better and I still have the view from my bedroom window. |

Re: Net curtains?
^ It is a nice village with a lot of farm land around, so is a peaceful place.
Yesterday I woke up early and was looking out of my bedroom window and could see two young hares exploring I sometimes see deers too on a walk, they live in a little copse nearby (I think) but if you go out early enough they are out and about in the fields. |

Re: Net curtains?
I thought only nannas and people with something to hide had net curtains.
The fashion these days seems to be to have those stick on frosted panels. The living room is at the back of this house, so no need. And I don't mind passers by watching me seductively peel carrots in the kitchen. |

Re: Net curtains?
^we inherited the net curtains in our house from the previous owner a 90 year old lady. She also left a granny three piece suite. Unfortunately the stair lift had been removed before I could play with it and make it go 30mph.

Re: Net curtains?
^^ Seductively? What are you peeling those carrots with??
We have some black voile, which I think are counted as a type of net curtain? We got them for our living room because we've purposely made it really dark in there - we only really watch TV in that room and the rest of the house is mostly bright, so we wanted to create a cinema feel. Plus despite Changing Rooms propaganda, not every room needs to be bright and airy. I'm quite happy with them, except the shitty wire we got for them droops. Need to find a replacement. |
