Can Professor Green teach men to talk about suicide?

In front of me is a tall, muscular, tattooed man with a large scar on his jaw. He’s the British rapper, Professor Green – real name Stephen Manderson – and despite the tough guy image that goes along with his job, he has tears in his eyes and his voice is breaking. Manderson is discussing a subject that’s been called a silent epidemic. It kills more men under 45 than anything else and yet it’s something many of us feel uncomfortable talking about. It’s male suicide and Manderson knows more about it than most. Seven years ago, Manderson’s estranged father took his life, despite showing no previous signs that he was suffering.

In a heartbreaking documentary for BBC3, Manderson, who was raised by his grandmother in the London borough of Hackney, let the cameras in as he delved into his father’s past in an attempt to work out what led him, like so many others, to suicide. A common thread in his research is how many relatives and friends of men who have taken their own lives did not see it coming.

Only as a part of a much wider movement that campaigns for men to be allowed to express emotion without fear of emasculating dismissal. That's a big ask.

Sorry, I was being abit too literal with the title! Although it's not been aired yet it I am unsure of how balanced it will be. Sure, you can try and get a man to express his deepest insecurities and troubles to the world but you also need to teach men AND women to listen and treat them seriously. Otherwise, he won't.

Not a fan of professor green but this is a very good programme to do.

I think his input is helpful. I'd normally give the guy a swerve due to not being remotely into the kind of music he makes, but I saw him on This Morning a few weeks ago now and I was impressed by him as a person. He talked about depression, suicide and having therapy himself. I thought he came over really well and apparently lots of people 'phoned in to the show afterwards to say what he said had been really helpful to them.

Every little helps, as they say.
