Re: TV programs you're watching?
^ ohhh. maybe it remembers my language/subtitles preferences?
If you fancy it, give it a go with the original Korean spoken language and English subtitles |

Re: TV programs you're watching?
^ I've heard people say that the subtitles are really bad, though, and don't capture the meaning of the original. So you'll just have to learn Korean!

Re: TV programs you're watching?
^ All subtitle translations will take some liberties with exact meanings since they not only have to translate the meaning of the dialogue while taking into account cultural differences, they also have limitations on how much text they can show on screen at once and how fast the viewer can read. Dubbing has the same problems (and the translations are often even worse since they're also trying to make their translations match the mouth movements as closely as possible) - but the extra problem of most dubbing actors not actually being good at acting. The staff that do dubbing for services like Netflix are low paid and work quickly with no time for extra takes, which is why they sound like they're efficiently reading dialogue from their notes rather than performing the lines, because that's exactly what they're doing.
There's always an option of subtitles with non-English things on Netflix though. It initially defaults to dubbed because it assumes audiences prefer that (and those who can't "watch" something without also looking at a phone in their hand generally do). It remembers which you "prefer", so if anyone finds it automatically playing something dubbed it means either your Netflix account is brand new, you've never watched anything foreign on it before, or you've previously watched shows with dubbing on after either choosing that option or not even knowing there was an option to turn it off. |

I'd definitely recommend watching the Korean original audio and having English subtitles, if you are able to. The actors are fantastic, don't miss that! |

Re: TV programs you're watching?
The new series of All Creatures Great and Small. I have a wee crush on the actor who plays James Herriot and the other actors are lovely too. It's nice, gentle viewing in a world that seems to be going to pot right now

Re: TV programs you're watching?
Ridley Road.
Set in 1960s East London amongst the rise of fascism. A really gripping drama. I knew about the National Front in the 70s, but wasn’t aware about the violence and marches of the 1960s where Nazi flags were flown - just over 15 years since we defeated them in WW2. With anti-Semitism on the rise from both the left and right, this drama seems quite apt. Really like the lead character, and it has a great supporting cast too. |

I've just finished watching Squid Game. There was rather a lot of blood and guts but it was surprisingly enjoyable (Don't think I've ever used that smilie before ).

Finally finished the first series of Narcos!
Now I'm starting series three of YOU and series one of Succession. It seems like there's a real trend at the moment for TV programmes about affluent people and their scandalous lives. |

The new Curb was fine. I knew there would be pandemic references in it but I think much more of that and it's going to get very annoying.

Re: TV programs you're watching?
The plopping was a good spot.
For years I myself have never been able to get my head around why people sit down with such ferocity! And I'll say this, any plopping I've ever observed has been 100% female. As a society, this needs to be discussed. |
