Default The forums are slowwwwwwwww

Hello you owner, admin and mod like people. Is it just me or is the forum running quite slow these days? At times its putting me off coming here and posting, I'm guessing the traffic has increased or something. Is there any possibility of speeding things up? I know I would be happy to donate a few quid to whoever pays the bills and im sure others would too.

yeah it is a very slow forum and at night its almost unusable (ironic given alot of us are up late and require it)

However . i assume its down to server costs. SOmeones gotta pay for this site and it isnt cheap. Iv heard not many people donate on here and most of it gets put in by the owner so he/she has to be applauded.

i'm on another forum and its fast as lightening 24/7 and has 6500 active members (14,000 members) HOwever it costs £380 a month to run and they take that off members who heavily donate . They constantly warn if they dont get donations they will close it up .

If you want speed , it comes at cost.

I dont want to step on toes but if the site was cleaned up more it might run better .

i know a bit about web hosting etc and a stand alone forum with 6500 active members should not cost £380 to run,

i suspect your site is may also be allowing streaming of videos and that is what is running up the huge bandwidth costs, i also suspect that it is some sort of pornography as it is those sites that usually have big bandwith costs.

that makes a bit more sense then. those websites cannot use things like google adsence etc to recoup revenue costs as most advertisers do not like sites of that nature. they have to use shitty advertisers who don't pay as much money.

but still it seems a bit high for only 6500 members, i wonder if they are hosting files on thier own sever available for download or something that would explain things.

i know a forum that had over a million members (last time i checked was around a year ago so they probably had more), it was a download site forum with links etc. there server costs were around 1000 dollars. i'm guessing atleast 50,000 to 100,000 were active members. Comepare that with your 6500 members for 380 dollars and there seems to be a big price difference...

there are no adverts/pop ups of any kind on their forum. Maybe that could be a factor to? i dont really know much about it

the forum is pspiso.com

i've had trouble with it in the past, where the site got hacked and it was spitting out virus's in it's adverts and stuff. i now do not go on there unless i have firefox extensions "no script" and "adblock plus" as these protect me. i suggest you don't go there either unless you have these firefox extensions. i don't know if they have gotten rid of their virus problem but i don't intend to take these extensions off to find out...

but you can safely google "pspiso 1 million members" and you will see from the search results that i am right about the place having 1 million members

We could do with an area dedicated to donations for a specific forum upgrade.

This is the worst i've seen them in ages.
Could all the extra gubbins such as the blogs be causing problems ? I've always thought it was a mistake to add too much stuff to an already dodgey server.

There's definitely some sort of ****ed up cycle to the server problems. It'll work fine for a few minutes then dump.
Seriously you need to get something better or cut away all the extra stuff.

This is easily the most frustrating forum i've ever used.

I posted in the "random crap" thread the other day asking for Mods to start new threads for that and 'how are you feeling' etc because when they start getting beyond 5-10 pags they take forever to download especially as most people are on their phone or another hand held device.

I made a donation yesterday and like Moomin I would pay a subscription if it helped sort it out a bit.

The tragedy was its been so bad over the xmas period when so many people depend on it a lifeline to stop feeling totally isolated and alone.

Hi, Phool

I missed your suggestion first time around, but I've picked up on it now and split all those threads in both the Games Room and Lounge with over a thousand replies to them. We usually split them around the 2000 post mark, but I don't think there's any real harm in cutting them back sooner than that. Hopefully, it will go some way to making things easier for you guys, especially, like you say, if you're using mobile phones and whatnot.

I can't apologize enough for the problems we've been having with the server recently. In a nutshell, we've about outgrown our current VPS package, and I don't think there is any more that can be done with it to make things better. However, we are looking at alternatives at the moment, and we will keep you all posted on what comes up. I'm confident that we'll have the board running better than ever in the coming weeks, and you can all look forward to a much more enjoyable, much less frustrating, experience here than you have probably had in recent times!

I'd be happy to pay a subscription as when I joined other paper based things like the phobic society and depression alliance by post I always paid a one off annual fee. I didn't know there was the possibility of donating as SA UK doesn't exactly advertise that they need money to keep going. I'll look into that as I do get a lot out of SA UK when I think about it. Also there is an owner ? Well that's news to me but I guess somebody has to feel they own SA UK.

I'm not really bothered about it taking ten more seconds to load a page though as lifes too short and were's the rush ?

It's been much worse than that. Often, mainly in the early hours of the morning, it's been practically unusable. However, Occultus has done some tinkering and it's now a little better. There are plans to hopefully sort out the problems altogether.
