Default Women, mental health, and hormones

Women experience depression twice as much as men, and four times as much anxiety—yet their mental health has not had high priority. Biological, social and psychological factors mean that men and women experience mental illness differently, so why shouldn’t gender be considered when developing treatments? All in the Mind hears about innovative hormonal therapy which may provide effective relief.

Thank you for sharing, I really enjoy reading all your informative posts, I haven't had a chance to read all the transcript but it does seem that gender should be considered more when treating mental illness.

Our hormones definitely get a battering through our lives, so depression and other mental health issues caused by hormonal imbalances are understandably high. I have quite severe PMT that intensifies my ongoing SA, but I am yet to find a GP who will do anything other than recommend I go on the pill (which I don't need and has always made me feel worse) or wear a pretty dress (yes, seriously was told this would sort me out).

Womens mental health is not taken as seriously as it should be. How many times, as a working single mother, have I heard 'everyone gets tired in your position'. Yes, because i'm obviously just tired

That's interesting to read, I didn't realise it affected women and men differently !

Hmm, yet the suicide rate is much higher amongst men.

When it comes to depression I think there's a lot of men who should be prescribed testosterone instead of shite anti depressants.

But most of us haven't got a hope in hell of getting a TRT prescription on the NHS.

That's because men tend to choose more lethal methods rather than a sign they are more depressed. I think women attempt suicide as much or more.

I'm not sure that suicide rates and rates of depression/anxiety are parallel. Depression/anxiety can grip a person for years without leading to suicide, and often suicide is a knee jerk reaction that does not always mean the person suffered any previous depression/anxiety.

I have read many times that suicide is highest among young men, and there definitely needs to be more research into this and more help available.

You mention testosterone, and this is something not talked about enough. Men can be affected by hormonal imbalances too! Most people think of testosterone as something for body builders, or something that makes men aggressive and territorial. Well, no more than oestrogen makes women weepy and vulnerable

My opinion is that the more we divide human beings up into categories, the easier it becomes to pathologize every facet of life and the nearer we get to the American model of children eating Ritalin like they are smarties.

Fairly obvious why: gender expectations.

All those who perpetuate such expectations are responsible for these deaths.

I think gender expectations plays a big part of it, yes. For all genders.
