Default Telephobia

the fear of phone calls.

I have this really bad. I hate calls.
even calling people I know and love scare the crap out of me.

I don't know why this is.

I can't say I have a fear of making calls but would say I have something of an aversion. I prefer people to phone me than to initiate a phone call.
When it comes to receiving phone calls the ones I dislike the most are the charities pushing for donations. The way they pressurise you is very intimidating. The trouble is I answer politely which allows them to get their hooks in and twist. I should be abrupt and put the phone down.

I'm the same ! I won't ring people up I get others to do it for me and speak on my behalf, if the phone rings I wont answer that either with the only exception being my siblings or parents and that is it ! Even then I feel a little awkward.

If the home phone rings and someone says it for me (which virtually never happens nowadays) I start to panic.

Hi

I have this as a major aspect of my SA as well. I have the phone at home permanently on an answer phone. Most cold callers won't leave a message but my family knows to leave a quick message so can phone them straight back. Anything important like a bank etc would usually leave a message as well.

I'm pretty good on the phone, but what gets my SA raging is if I have to make a call at work (work related) and there are other people in the office who can hear me. I usually wait till lunchtime when they are all in the cafe to make any work related calls!

This is one of the main things that triggers anxiety for me. I've avoided applying for jobs in the past if they mention you have to use the phone, which has severely limited which jobs I can work in. I'm far more comfortable speaking face to face or via e-mail than over the phone.

I'm pleased that I finally managed to make an appointment to see the doctor over the phone today as I have been putting it off for weeks now. I won't be able to make it to the surgery so have booked a telephone consultation for next Monday. My heart was racing like crazy and I was worried I might throw up but now it's over I'm pleased I did it. I USED A PHONE, AN ACTUAL PHONE!

Thinking

Default Re: Telephobia

I have quite a lot of issues around using the phone.
It interrupts my train of thought.
It interrupts what I am doing
I don't always want to talk
I feel I have to sound interested and be polite (pressure)
I worry if the phone rings over and over it makes me anxious
If I miss a call I have to ring 1471 incase it was something important
When anxious or if there is background noise I cant always tune into what is being said
For this reason I have the answering machine on most of the time lol
