Default Website Security

Have noticed quite a lot lately that when accessing this website, the browser bar will have an alert sign warning that this is not a secure website,

Haven't noticed this in the past, ...just wondering if something has changed lately?

I think Freya recently made the point that the site should ideally carry an https prefix.

Are we talking money, ..lack of funds, to ensure a secure site?
I'd hate to see this place become a victim of malicious web attack or anything.

It's not a major risk.
Recently some of the browsers decided to flag http sites as insecure. This is largely overblown for a site like SAUK, it would take a lot of effort to pull off an impersonation attack for no real gain, and you're not sharing valuable information here, most likely. Unlike say an e-commerce site or banking website.
Https is more costly in terms of the amount of processing the server has to do, but not by much, most modern CPUs have fast encryption hardware built in. It's more the effort required to set it up properly. The site owner would have to do that.

It's an issue of time and being able to get in touch with the right people to sort everything out. It's always on my list to do but I am so busy it is unfortunately at the bottom of the list. It is something I have to keep pursuing as those with the know-how are either ill or extremely busy themselves.

No worries, thanks for the replies,
There has been some odd activity lately with 8,800 people apparently viewing the site at one point today.
I tend to get wary of certain things, probably unnecessarily.

I don't know why bots would be interested in this site. We don't have a lot of spam posts as far as I can tell. Maybe we just have better defences against that sort of thing.
There was that one bot posting about that girl looking at him and what does it mean? but I can't think of any other examples.

^ Oh! Didn't know that. What do the bots gain from making actual posts?

^^most sites it's just a form of advertising, they post adverts and links to dodgy products. The more links there are to your site, the more the search engines think it's 'legit'. I haven't seen that here. I don't know what the ones gain who post random text or pretend to be human, maybe it's an attempt to appear human to automated spam filters before they start on their spamming spree.

That's so weird that they can pretend to be human and make sa posts! I guess it's an attempt to make people think, "Oh that guy's legit, I'll click on that." Like when you get spam emails from friends asking you to click on links.

^ they aren't that good at pretending to be human, it's only good enough to fool automated systems, not other humans. Sometimes a few random posts about anything will do it.

I assumed he was a troll to be honest but if you Google the post that he posts over and over again on this site, it'll take you to a lot of other forums where he posts the same thing.
