 I can empathise as I've done similar in the past. Thing is, sometimes people can say something like that and they actually do mean it in a joking way ("You'll never believe what happened!" and for it to be something bizarre and non serious). Sounds like you had a 50/50 chance and unfortunately on this occasion it was something more serious
