Tying shoelaces

I learnt to tie my shoelaces I think within a normal time but find my laces come undone fairly easy when I wear lace up shoes. Having seen videos on shoelace tying though I am not sure I do it right. I cross the left lace over the right and take the top half of the left lace under the right one and pull tight. I then make two loops cross the left loop over the right loop,through the little hole that's made and pull together. That is the way I've always done it.

My school friend used to do it like that.

I go left over right and under, then make a loop with the left one, wind the right one around the base of the loop and then shove a bit through to make another loop :D

One of my earliest memories is of sitting on the living room floor learning to tie my laces

I was taught by King Rollo! I've done it this way ever since. Is this how you do it, FM?

(I could only find it in Chinese... The shoe tying is at 1:30)

^ I hadn't seen that since I was a nipper. The way you described it is the way I do it, by making two loops and tying them together.

I just tie instinctively now, so didn't actually have a clue how I did it. So, I've just gone through it slowly to see.

Anyway, I go right lace under then over left lace then pull tight.

Make a look out of right lace with my right hand.

Bring left lace around loop then tuck it into the hole just created near the tongue of the shoe.

Then pull the middle of the left lace tight, thus creating your second loop.

I rarely have a problem with laces coming undone, but with longer laces I might double knot.

I remember trying to learn to tie my laces as a child and truly believing the task was way beyond me and that I'd never master it.


EDIT: I definitely don't tie mine like King Rollo. I've never seen it done that way before.

It's not as good as the 'correct' way. It's slower and the knot isn't as secure. So don't teach it to any children or they won't bother to learn the right way!

I gave it a try and it worked fine, but it did feel a bit awkward to do compared to the way I usually tie mine. I didn't even know there were different ways to tie laces never mind knew there is actually a 'correct' way.

I was just thinking earlier. As a child I never thought I'd ever master shoelaces, but even worse, I was baffled on how to do up a neck tie.
As much as I loathe wearing ties these days I have sort of got the hang of tying one of the monstosities now.

I don't even want to think about how I tie my laces in case my brain breaks and I forget how to do it. It just sort of... happens, whenever I pop my shoes on.

Heh. I actually looked into this a while ago. My shoelaces always used to come undone. I was going to learn to paraglide and didn't want my boots to fall off in midair!
I found a technique online that is supposedly more secure. If I find that page again I'll post it here.

I think the way I do it is: first cross both ends, pull the frontmost end back under the other and out through the front, then pull each end tight. (Half Hitch?)
Now make a loop with each end, cross the loops. Pull the end of the frontmost loop back and under the other lace, whilst pulling the end of the backmost loop forwards and under its other lace.
Now grab the two loop ends at once and pull them tight. (I think the whole thing may be a Double Slip Knot)

Will be 60 next month. Think I was a fairly average when I learnt, but am waiting for my dad to say(if he can remember).

From this reply from my dad probably quite late although he couldn't give a precise age.

Sorry Tim, only just seen this. I cannot remember when you first tied your shoelaces. I don't suupose anyone learns before the age of five and at that age you were in Thailand for the next four years, where children onlywore sandals or flip flops. So I don;t think any average for this need apply to you. Love, Dad

Maybe some time after leaving Thailand and starting prep school which would have made me 7.75 to 8. I certainly think I would have needed to know how to do so then as the teachers wouldn't have helped me with such a task.
