Default Want to Haircut at home, after watching youtube

My regular barber retired, I was using him for 32 years, since i was 15.

Does anyone cut their own hair, or get a relative to cut hair at home.

I don't really fancy the anxiety of finding a new barber shop. And they are all closed now due to CV anway.

I bought some quality hair clippers off amazon 3 weeks ago, cost £50. You cant get them anymore as amazon now looks completely sold out.

Have asked my wife to give me a easy Buzzcut. As my hair is now quite a mop after 4 months. So far she hasnt agreed, she hasnt held a pair of clippers before and neither have i.

I was trying to convince her to give me a Number 8 on top and number 7 on the sides and back, as that is quite low risk.

If she doesnt agree i might try it myself. Will need a couple of mirrors if i do it myself.

This video describes the number sizes on the clippers, number 8 is longest and number 1 the shortest.

Yeah I used to do mine when I had it short, but I'd just do the same number all over. No need for a mirror, just keep going over it all until it's not cutting anymore. Then check with someone you live with to make sure it all looks OK.

My clippers are broken I think, but given the Covid-19 situation I might have to try and fix them!

I cut my own hair, but I have shoulder length hair so it's a bit of a different process! It's doable though and you can watch videos on YouTube like you say on the best way to do it.

You will **** it up. Just like anyone whose used a pair of Clippers for the first time. It's no big deal though. More you do it, the better you'll become at it.

I just do a number 1 all over. Without a mirror. Once you go over the back multiple times, you'll know if you've cut it properly.

Good Luck

I cut my own hair well into my twenties...don’t do it would be my advice getting your hair looking ok is a big deal towards feeling good about yourself in general. Unless you 100% can’t overcome the anxiety. I hate being in the barber and worry about what they’ll ask me etc. But it’s never really that bad. Just stick to one word answers like and they’ll get the hint you’re not a talker...in theory.

It's quite easy really with the clippers, I used to cut my husband's hair. Start off with a longer cut than you think you want, you can always move on to a shorter number. The first time I did my husband's hair I started off cutting a kind of path through it with the No. 1, that was far too short so I moved on to No. 3. But for a while he went around looking as if he was recovering from a lobotomy.

Given that no Barbers are likely to be operating until June (at the earliest), I think many people (myself included) are going to be cutting their hair at home!!

Oh gosh...my hair is in serious need of a trim, but the trouble is I'm a bit too optimistic for my own good sometimes.

Has anyone had much success with cutting longer hair? Any tips.

I cut my own hair. Luckily it's curly so if I mess it up it doesn't really show. I cut my husband's hair with clippers. Think he has a number 4. He always seems pleased with it.

Your wife is missing such an opportunity. I’ve always wanted to carve my name into the back of someone’s head. Maybe you should just spend all day annoying her until she decides to take it out on your hair. It’s really a perfect opportunity to try a Mohawk as hardly anyone is going to see you for a while. I’ve cut my fringe before. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. I’ve bleached my hair before. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it left my hair falling out everywhere. Live and learn.

I've been cutting my hair at home now for at least 10 years,
What prompted me to start doing that was the financial aspect as well as SA obviously,
I was getting annoyed at sitting waiting in a busy barber shop for about 20 to 25 minutes in a queue then being buzz-cut in about 4 minutes and then paying about £12 for the privilege,
You can buy male hair clppers for about £10 (or at least you could back then)
So, straight away I was saving money,
It takes a few attempts to perfect a decent cut, but you learn as you go,
I've never looked up YouTube to find how to cut hair, but I suppose YouTube is really good for a lot of tutorials so why not for hair?

I recon I've probably saved myself about £2k on haircuts already

I feel that 90%+ of how I feel about my appearance is about how my hair looks, and with it now being a few weeks over, and getting unmanageable I'm already doing things I don't normally do, like shaving every single day and changing my clothes 3 times before leaving the house to try to compensate and make myself look better in ways other than with hair.

I cut my hair years back with clippers, think on an all over 5 and it was much shorter than I imagined it would look. I would normally have it around a 20 on top ( if combs actually are made to cut as long as that ).

I measured my brothers hair in about 20 places once after he'd had his cut and then he tried to do a "cut by numbers" on me using these measurements but he found it incredibly difficult, although I never understood why. He felt that even though he had the information about how long it should be in every point, it was still like he didn't have a clue what he was supposed to be doing. I wonder if these sorts of templates exist anywhere.

I decided to just buy a hat rather than risk cutting my own hair. I'm working from home now, so there's no need to look tidy anymore. If I lived with someone else I'd get them to buzz it on grade 5 all over, but I wouldn't try anything fancier than that.

I’ve been cutting my hair for 7 years on and off. Cut it myself though now after a bad barber experience. It feels rewarding though at first I was bad at it.

It takes longer to do than the barbers though.

^ Yeah, it does take longer and is a bit of a job with the clearing of hair from ... everywhere! Have a vacuum handy - also vacuum your head (as stupid as it sounds) cos it does help ridding all the little clippings caught in the hair that's left.

I've just done mine

I'm thinking of buying a second clipper as it heats up when you use it for some time and I wouldn't want to rush a haircut.

Also it requires two mirrors and decent lighting if you are doing it yourself.

Aw. Thanks! I'm going to hold off on this for as long as possible because I can see it ending in disaster because I've done it before and it ended in disaster. Just bought some stupidly expensive conditioning treatment to try and maintain my hair's health for as long as.

I don't vacuum my head but shower after a cut. I also use a brush that has talcum power to brush hair off.

Yeah, showering after is my usual routine too.

Still woke up with clippings all over my pillow though

My hair texture is probably different to yours though, it's tightly curled afro texture and short so probably is a bit different to how it would act after being cut.
