Re: Stews
I loves a good stew I do but haven't eaten one for years.
When I was little my dad had a boat moored on a local river and we'd often spend weekends sailing up and down or moored outside a pub (happy days). My mum used to make 'boat stew' which was eaten out of a bowl with a spoon. She used to add baked beans as well which seemed to make it even better. |

Re: Stews
What's the difference between stew and casserole? I've never quite understood.

Re: Stews
^Makes sense, I've never attempted to cook either of them myself. At home I've only ever had casserole then, but my nan used to do a stew. It wasn't that great. She used to melt down some extra lard to mix in with the gravy so it was filled with greasy bubbles***8230;

Re: Stews
The difference might be that stews are more liquid? I know that we used to eat casserole off a plate and stew out of a bowl.

Re: Stews
I prefer lamb stew to beef, but given the exorbitant price of lamb it's not a cheap meal any more.

I'm not sure if there's a clear difference, but stews are usually slow cooked. Or ours are, at least. With casseroles we usually make a roux first, and add that. Though you can also do that with stews too I associate stew more with beef or lamb, and casserole with things like chicken, though that's probably not set in stone either. |

Re: Stews
^^ Pretty sure Pandapop's answer above is correct. Or at least it is in my book anyway Yeah, I start off my stew's with a roux. I was brought up eating horrible, watery-oxo stews so they need that thickness for me.
Edit: If there isn't one already, we totally need a video thread with us cooking our favourite recipes. |

Re: Stews
I love stews.
So many different kinds, too. I don't have a favourite. I like tomato based ones, milk based, just stock based. I think I have never made a stew that didn't contain onions though. I once made an apple and chicken stew, it was ok actually. Can make them as low fat/calorie as want, too. I think I like it that it's a cheap way to make lots of food and you can just bang in pretty much anything you like. |
