Default I hate my life, I want a new one

I've no idea what to do with my life. I've had it my mind for a few months now that I no longer wanted to be self employed. I hate the solitude and endless repetition of boring tasks. I know now the only reason I am self employed is because of my SA/BDD. It makes me sick thinking how much they have controlled my life.
I'm 26 now and feel like I've missed my shot at doing anything worthwhile with my life. My therapist laughs at me when I tell him 'I'm 26 and past it'.
I took everything offline during the week hoping it would inspire new ideas. Instead it has scared the life out of me. I just need something to aim for in the long term. A reason to keep taking each painful little step.
I still feel switched on, I just need a little direction.
Now SAUK tell me what to do with my life. Serious and ridiculous suggestions welcome.
Thanks

My god, you're as old as me. We'll soon be cashing our pensions What were you self employed as? Do you have any qualifications or other job experience? What would you like to do in an alternative reality without your major issues? (Job or leisure pursuits).

I had a on-line record shop. I've always been creative, but too creative to have any sought of career. I love patterns, numbers, avoiding people, giving people dirty looks and giving money away to strangers. I always wanted to be a brain surgeon as a kid, but now I have tremors so bad I doubt I'd be allowed to be a butcher.

It was great in the beginning but it soon changes. Everything becomes profit, I no longer see great music all I see is money.
I've built 2 web sites, I did kill the first one because I enjoyed building it so much and wanted to do it again. If I wanted to be a web designer then I would want a degree and I couldn't be dragged into a university.

If you ask me, a therapist who laughs at your feelings of anxiety is a sh*t therapist. Any chance you could find another?

It's such a strange belief to have, my life is over at 26. It could probably do with being shot down. I guess we all prefer our therapists to behave a certain way. I prefer my therapist to be open and allow his/her feelings to show. I once had a counsellor who was straight faced and I just couldn't open up to him because he wasn't showing me how he felt about what I was saying.

You dont neccessariy need a degree for web design jobs.

If you can produce a portfolio of work that showcases your abillity to use all the various tech and protocols.....PHP, ASP, Java, CSS etc, and also considering you have commercial experience using your web skills for your own enterprise, you would stand a very good chance at landing a very cushy, well paid job.

i think alot of people like the idea of being a web designer or a graphic artist but you need to have a 100% genuine interest in doing it and be actively creating all the time to make it have any value ....

i have a friend who only really showed interest in class but not outside of class ...seemed a bit unsure if this is what she wanted to do ...and it can be hard for people tor really know unless its an obvious interest..

thats why i'm staggered that people go to university if they arn't at least 75% sure its the subject they want to study ...considering how bloody expensive university is and the amount of agony a loan can bring ..

the preperation involved is really important so you know what career you want or why you want to study a course. ..
don't do it because you want to please other people..

I used to do web and graphic design and ended up hating it. Not as creative as you'd imagine unless you get the cream of the interesting jobs (hard coz it's so competative) so personally i'd give that the thumbs down. But everyone's different right?

What about creative writing of some sort?

"I love patterns, numbers, avoiding people, giving people dirty looks and giving money away to strangers. I always wanted to be a brain surgeon as a kid, but now I have tremors so bad I doubt I'd be allowed to be a butcher."

That's a pretty tasty piece of creative writing!

Okay then, Web design is a no go.
As for writing, I stopped paying attention in English class the very second the SA kicked in. This has left me with the literacy skills of a 10 year old. Maybe I could write a children's book.:hmmm:

You might need to tackle the SA first cos thats the real problem, it's clear-as others have mentioned that you ARE talented, you ARE creative in both the way you write and the way you express yourself to the therapist and your line of work and you DO have much potential-all reveal a fascinating person.

So, as you've identified it's the SA that really needs dealing with, you don't have to go to University or take those well worn routes, many creative types find a niche and specialise in that one area but you don't want to feel like you can't have all the options either.

Maybe start with some careers advice into training courses or apprenticeships cos you have good skills.

good luck.

Just want to offer a disclaimer: beware of advice, including mine... Only you can decide if you want to do web design.

As for literacy skills they can be learnt - and relatively quickly if you're assiduous, but can creativity, imagination and a gift for turning a phrase?

I work from home as a self-employed / freelance web developer.

I think for people with SA / Agoraphobia working from home is the worst thing they / we can do, as it just gets one into the habit of not interacting with people and makes it near impossible to get better, as not in many social situations.

Im looking to get a job very soon, very nerveracking!

You sound like someone i would get on with, being a number and music lover myself! I studied music and computing at uni too...

Good luck, i think and hope getting a job and being out of the house is the way to go, but will report back in a month or so!

I dont think its wise to rely on others for ideas for a job!
You must do what you like the most, or what interests you, or what uses your skills the most......

Sounds like you could easily build sites for people. I used to with no skills, and I'm not even that good! As long as they get to see the things you've done, you've got no problems.

anyway, here are some ideas lol

music critic, accountant, photographer, landscaper, dj, graphic designer, produce your own art or record cover artwork, interior design, architect, maths teacher,

If you get a new life, Chaplin, get one for me as well! Don't panic though, you are young and have plenty of time to do whatever you want.

There are a lot of web developers around, aren't there? Is there that much demand for them? These days dustmen and waiters are probably ex-web developers.
