That apparently NHS nurses have to pay to park in hospital car parks now. Since when? I know they may not be the only people that have to pay to park at their place of employment, but still, it doesn't seem right to me, surely they're already underpaid and undervalued as it is

That in general apparently introverts and extroverts have different ways of communicating and perceive certain actions, communication wise, differently.

If you freeze a bottle of water and then put it in front of a fan then it blows ice cold air round the room

^^ That's quite a good idea. How long before it becomes ineffective?

The temperatures dropped a fair bit here, tonight. Would of been useful the previous few nights.

That the word 'spade' (as in a tool we Brits use to dig with) is actually an extremely offensive and derogatory term for an African-American person in the US, wow, incredible how the word for an innocuous object over here has such a different meaning across the Atlantic!

Reminds me of a tour guide in America who mentioned his amazement when a British person said to him they were 'just going out to smoke a fag' (i.e. just going out to smoke a cigarette in British terms), when the meaning of that sentence is so, so different in the US

That double glazing has silica crystals in the aluminium spacer bar between the two panes of glass. That's why the spacer is perforated.

On any given day there's a 1 in 20 chance of a woman getting pregnant if you use no contraception.

the Thames used to ice over, before the embankment was constructed, and that Londoners even held ice fairs on it. Apparently the embankment made the river flow faster, making it less likely to freeze over.

interesting eh. Well, I thought so.

Because i was going to use it in this sort of context: "I just got the hang of these computer jobbies".. it's primary use. It's quite useful when you can't find the right word.

Anyway, i was typing it out, because it sounded right, but i thought i'd google it as i was unsure.

^^ That's super interesting. I was aware the Thames used to freeze over and that frost fairs were held, but had no idea about embankment being responsible for it no longer freezing over as it once did.

Slightly related: earlier on in the week I discovered that that hot water freezes faster than cold water does. Really. It's known as the Mpemba effect, and has been observed and recorded as early as 4th century B.C. by Aristotle (so it was probably known about before then). Something to do with the bonds between those little oxygen and hydrogen atoms, it's thought.
