“Not as bad as you think”:Menopause
Discussion of the menopause tends be negative. Take the video introduction to “menopause week” held this week on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio Sheffield. The well-meaning presenters talk of “distress”, the impact, the “troubling” changes, and “how to get through it”. Of course the aim is to support and educate, and it’s important to acknowledge the seriousness of some women’s problems. However, there’s arguably a risk that an overly negative tone perpetuates beliefs and stereotypes that may foster unjustified dread about the menopause.
In fact, according to a recent study in the Journal of PsychoSomatic Obstetrics and Gynecology, involving nearly 400 women aged between 40 and 60, overall women have a positive view of the menopause. What’s more, women who’ve gone through the menopause have a more positive take on it than those who’ve yet to start or who are in the middle of it. https://digest.bps.org.uk/2018/01/18...arch+Digest%29 |

Re: “Not as bad as you think”:Menopause
^Denial of the ageing process? My mother's menopause was a particularly troubled one, including not only physical symptoms but also mood swings and violent outbursts (as both my father and myself could testify). Without HRT (which also helps prevent osteoporosis), things could have been a lot worse.
It is true that I have met a number of women who have gone through menopause with few issues (although I don't know anyone who has escaped hot flushes and night sweats), but I've also met others for whom HRT has been a blessing. I can understand the point in the OP about those who have gone through the menopause having a more positive attitude to it, as most of the post-menopausal women I have known seem to have a sense of sexual freedom and an increased sex drive. |

Try going though it and then see how you feel about the whole thing HH. (Men professing to know more about women's hormonal issues than women themselves is never a good idea.)

Re: “Not as bad as you think”:Menopause
The end of periods is the only good thing about it yes.
But you can still get pregnant within the first 2 years of menopause. I dread it too. I also think employers need to be more sympathetic towards it. My mum had it bad til she took hrt and she just sailed through it so hopefully I'll be the same. Dont shoot me but Sometimes I feel it's always the women that have to suffer , periods, contraception, menopause...hate it. |

Re: “Not as bad as you think”:Menopause
I guess it depends on the woman, a lot of it doesn't sound too wonderful.. but yeah yay for no more periods.
I do find it annoying that many women's health issues aren't taken seriously though. I knew someone who had endometriosis and she had loads of doctors say variants of "periods are meant to hurt dear." |

Re: “Not as bad as you think”:Menopause
I suspect it's one of those YMMV things. Like many things in life.
