Watched Ghost World last night for the first time in forever. It hit me that the last time I saw it I was closer to Enid's age, and probably had similar enthusiasm and energy, but this time I'm much closer to Seymour's and his depressing life.

Also kind of sad knowing that it was basically the peak of Thora Birch's career, her appearances in The Walking Dead are the first thing I've seen her in in nearly 20 years. Kind of fitting that Scarlett Johansson was the one who'd go on to fame and fortune. And poor Brad Renfro

7500 (2020) - 6/10 Pretty lackluster hostage taking airplane film.

Mulholland Falls (1996) - 7.5/10 Was ok

Mortal Kombat: Aftermath (2020) -8.5/10 Ok technically not a film but Mk11 story campaign but watched the cutscenes edited into a single movie.

A Taste of Honey.

A 'kitchen sink drama' from 1961. It seems quite incredible watching a black and white film from 60 years ago dealing with an interracial relationship, single parenthood and with a gay character. Storyline was good, and good acting. Lots of location shots around Salford for anyone interested in history!

Transsiberian

Set on the Transsiberian railway, and things go wrong for an American couple. Emily Mortimer and Ben Kingsley were brilliant in this. I really liked the setting in this, and it was captured well.

Recently watched Bully, and Another Day in Paradise. Anything involving Larry Clark makes you feel a bit like you should have the DVD in a paper bag hidden underneath your raincoat, but his films have a raw, ugly-beautiful, none-sugar-coated-ness that I like. His recurring theme of fairly explicit teenage sexuality does give that queasy feeling that you're looking in on a dirty old man's wank fantasies, which probably isn't entirely untrue, but from what I can tell rampantly rutting teenage druggies has been his artistic focus since he was one himself, so I don't know, does it necessarily have a shelf life?

I really like the ending scene from Bully for some reason, the music along with the just-witnessed-a-car-wreck atmosphere. Spoilers, obviously...

The Taking of Deborah Logan - 8/10

Wasn't expecting much from this but it did hold me and although the story line is fairly easy to guess, for a horror film it did disturb me a bit.

^ on Amazon Prime. This was really good. I like horror films where the early character building stuff is so good you feel like you're watching a comedy, or drama. 8/10

Paterson
Pretty sweet and charming, will probably become one of my favourites. I like how in the voice over he speaks as if he's writing it down, it has that rhythm.
although the 2 random encounters he has aren't very realistic

Really good and pretty relevent to current events. It's about a time in the future where people spend the majority of their time playing a game online in VR rather than in the real world. Also has Simon Pegg in it, usually a good sign.

Philadelphia 10/10.

One of the very few films that can make me cry. I was an absolute mess after this! A beautiful film, but upsetting. The characters are portrayed really well, and there are touches of humour.

It’s great things have improved a bit, but really saddening how much prejudice there still is, with many refusing to see it.

Bicentennial Man.

A family film about a robot who develops human feelings. One of the most ridiculous films I’ve seen. It starts out with promise, but gets more and more implausible as it goes on. Even having the wonderful Robin Williams doesn’t save it.

The Last of Us part 2: 7/10

Yes another video game that I watched the cutscenes and only cutscenes edited together that leaving out gameplay segments of dialogue probably effected the understanding or impact of certain scenes but really wasn't all that interested especially when it detours for the most part following the new character of Abby.

The Soloist: 7/10

An LA newspaper reporter (Robert Downey Jr.) strikes up an unlikely friendship with a mentally ill homeless musician (Jamie Foxx).

Poignantly sad but uplifting in parts.

I liked it

Some solid comedic lines dispersed amongst the darkness.

It's on All4 for the next week
