The Boy 7.5/10

I See You 8/10 Good mystery horror thriller film. Helen Hunts botox face was pretty distracting though. Reminded me of Odo from ds9.

Bone Tomahawk

I remember rating this poorly some time ago, not long after it's release. I gave it another look over this afternoon - for the benefit of the doubt - and, yeah, i still think it's shit.

I think, it only really works if you have a decent knowledge of Soviet/Russian History and have some understanding of who the main characters were.

I do though, so I rather liked it.

Actually knowing all the stories about Stalin, his key figures and his legendary paranoia should had made a source for a funnier film.

^ Life’s too short to take a ‘blind’ chance on a film Nanuq, always check its IMDB rating before viewing. Anything under a 7 or 7.5 I never bother with. Swerve cones in at 6.7.

The output of both film and TV productions is so excessive that quality goes out the window, half-baked ideas and scripts, the majority utter garbage, but the sexy highlights trailers or half-decent opening episodes or scenes draw you into what so often proves to be an exercise in abject, hollow futility when you could be doing something more productive like sewing your own Bayeux Tapestry or making a gingerbread house.

D! You could have watched 'Cold Pursuit' starring ageing dish of the day/action hero Liam Neeson instead!

Manhunt 1/10

More of the Birdemic quality of film making. Horrible sound, stock SFX and bad acting.
Did have a few unintentionally funny scenes though that I watched for.

Horrible Bosses 4/10.

Just put this on for something to watch really. Just a bog standard Hollywood comedy, which like most of them tries far too hard to be funny. The main characters were irritating, and the film ended up being a bit disappointing, as not as much happened as I thought it would. The supporting characters were good though like Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. I bet a lot of people enjoy seeing Kevin Spacey getting punched too.

Goodbye Lenin! 9/10.

A German black comedy set in East Berlin. A mother ends up in a coma, and in that time the Berlin Wall falls and the DDR collapses. When she wakes up, to avoid giving her a potentially fatal shock, the family pretend nothing has happened. Lots of good witty humour, some of which might only make sense if you know a little about the history. The stereotype that Germans have no sense of humour is clearly not true. This film was right up my street, much more so than any Hollywood 'comedy'!

^ I love actor Daniel Bruhl in anything. If you liked Goodbye Lenin, another great film of his is The Edukators, also featuring the brilliant Julia Jentsch, who starred in the equally excellent Sophie Scholl. Both films highly recommended if Deutsche cinema is your thing. European cinema knocks the socks off formulaic Hollywood gravy train mush imho.

Its kind of a funny story. Zach galifianakis is the only good thing about it. I've never seen him in a serious role before but he did really well in how he portrayed that character.
I never realised that kings shawshank quote "get busy living or get busy dying was inspired by dylans its alright ma.

Thank you for the recommendation! Both of those sound right up my street, but I’ve never heard of them before! I’ve been trying to watch more European cinema, but it seems quite hard to come by sadly. Every now and then there is something on Film4 in the early hours. I watched Goodbye Lenin by paying to watch it on Amazon Prime. Where else would you recommend finding other films?

There are some great US/Hollywood films, but I think they get more than their fair share of viewtime in the UK! I’d like to see something from other cultures. So definitely trying to watch some more world cinema (not just European).

^ having a TV with no reception (purposely) I hoover up cheap second hand DVD films (usually cheaper than Prime) on eBay and Amazon and also in charity shops to watch on it. World/European cinema has so much to offer, in particular France, Spain and Brazil in all genres. Honourable mentions to Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland and Germany.

same here

think it works out a pretty good deal in the long run,
that way you can choose your viewing a lot more accurately and selectively.
