Default Places you must go (UK)

Places you been that you'd recommend others to go to:
This might pan out as a sort of tourist leaflet. (for places to visit - all over the country since everyone here is all over)

(places could be cities, towns, attraction, counties, experiences etc)

I'd say Cardiff Castle - you get two castles for the price of one. And it's an amazing castle that was used as an air shelter during the war because of how strong the walls were. And part of the castle is set up to recreate that.

Cornwall- another one. People say Cornwall is like another country - and it's true because it's so different.

Dartmoor- it's basically just moor. But Steven Speilburg reckoned it was one of the most unique places he'd been to.

Lake District - beautiful, like something out of Heidi
Snowdonia - stunning, reminded me of Yosemite
New Forest - tranquil, lovely ponies

Eilean Donan Castle

Highly photographed but the castle itself is not the best I've visited however the surrounding area is stunning.

'80s film fans might have spotted that this was the castle used at the beginning of Highlander

The major cities all have their attractions. I think Belfast is worth a visit too and is often overlooked- good food and good local live music scene.

A couple of places I like:

Giant's Causeway

Lizard Point: the most southernly tip of mainland UK

The highlands in Scotland, and the Falkirk wheel is cool if you're into your machines

Cornwall in general, plus theres an abandoned airplane graveyard there which was epic to walk around. Messed around in old jet planes. :D

Electric Brae optical illusion: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_Brae

Afan forest in Wales (bring your mountain bike!)

I'm going to the highlands this year (Skye at least, though I'll try and visit as much of it as I can within reason). Must get a decent camera before then!

I've been there, but sadly I was too young to remember much of it (but from what I do remember, the views were absolutely incredible).

I reckon Northumberland is one of the most underrated and undermentioned places. It's beautiful. Great moorlands, fantastic coast, amazing castles and more.

For me, the whole of Scotland north of Glasgow is just the best. Skye is the best place in the world.

^ Your missing a lot to be fair. The Borders area has stunning country side and loads of great historical sites. Places are like Melrose and the surroundings area very much worth a visit. There is also plenty of beautiful country side to be found a short drive outside Glasgow, Loch Lomond as an example. Its not just the North that's beautiful .

^ I thought someone might stick up for the south! I like the drama of the north and always seem to just drive through the south - I have relatives further up. We call north of Glasgow the 'real Scotland'.

NW Highlands, not for just the mountains and general wild landscapes but for the beaches as well, like these 2 that I've been to

Snowdonia has already been said, but next to snowdonia is the Ll***375;n Peninsula, not dramatic like snowdonia but still absolutely beautiful and much quieter as well, I love it

Don't get me wrong the North is amazingly beautiful my Mother's Dads family are from the Highlands and the North East and luckily I've spent a lot of time up there over the years but there definitely seems to be the commonly held misconception that Central Scotland and the Borders are lacking in as beautiful countryside as up there.

I've only spent time in the borders twice over the years but the areas around the river Tweed where I was, were spectacular, I was surprised just how beautiful it was down there.

^ The Southern Uplands make a good alternative to the overcrowded Lake District, too, and are only a couple of hours' drive north. For walking and cycling holidays, they'd be a better bet for those who want to avoid the crowds. I also love the scenery around Galloway Forest Park, as long as the midges aren't hungry...

I'll just be talking about Kent here as i've got to know it well:

Whitstable - Lovely seaside town, which has been 'gentrified' over the years. Has a vibrant high street with plenty of independent stores. A nice beach (not sandy though). A matter of opinion, but I think its also good to see some of the town still being industrial (i.e. oysters, fishing).

Deal - Unlike Whitstable, the town centre is a bit boring. But, still a lovely seaside town. Still has working fishing boats on the beach.

I find it strange going to seaside towns which are not rundown. Most of the Kent seaside towns arn't exactly desireable places. Broadstairs and Herne Bay are ok. Folkestone and Dover are awful.

Mentioned this place elsewhere plenty of times, but Canterbury is a great place to visit. For a 'city' I think its a perfect traditional sort of size. Loads of old buildings, nice city centre. Apparently this is the 2nd most visited tourist destination outside of London (there are groups of French tourists there pretty much every day).

Sandwich is very nice. A bit like a mini-Canterbury. Plus it seems very sleepy.

Stonehenge is quite interesting really, though you can not get very close to it or even touch it. Bus tours are pretty cheap and I'd say it's worth seeing.

I love second hand book stores, that looks wonderful. Good post.
