Is anyone else more nervous around certain races of ppl
I wouldnt say im racist or anything but 4 some reason im more shy around black ppl than asians. Im black btw. I think the reason im usually more shy around black ppl is cause i think im more likely 2 be judged by them. However girls i seem to fancy r mostly black girls. I know these thoughts and generalisations arent true but they seem to unconciously come into my mind. Most of my friends at college are Asian and white even though nearly my whole college is full of black ppl.
Although im more shy around ... |

Re: Is anyone else more nervous around certain races of ppl
Certain races of ppl, certain charcteristics of some ppl make me shy around them.
I need to stop prejudging ppl on tiny stuff, but the judgement seems to come unconciously. |

Not really, I'm more likely to make my unreasonable, ill founded snap judgements based on the way people are dressed or the way they speak.
I'm, like, 55-60% joking... |

Re: Is anyone else more nervous around certain races of ppl
No, I do associate young black people with being more likely to be part of gangster rap culture though. My experience of anyone whether black white or middle eastern who's into gangster rap and general chavness is not good at all, but you can usually identify them by their clothes, body language and speech so race isn't much of a factor after that.
Maybe that's wrong but it's the way I feel. |

Re: Is anyone else more nervous around certain races of ppl
A nice question. I guess I'm more scared of black people. I've been threatened with violence twice in my life and both times was by black people so I suppose it's because of experience, and also stories I hear about most stabbings/shootings being done by them.
Regarding other races, I'm actually more nervous with white people than Asians. Actually when I think about it that's probably from experience too from times when I used to be teased or bullied etc. |

Re: Is anyone else more nervous around certain races of ppl
I was always the only white friend in my friendship groups in secondary school. I'm not sure why I gravitated towards them but they were all mostly Asian or Middle Eastern and when I went back for six form there was a black girl who they had joined the group. Apart from her who was Christian, they either were Hindu or Muslim and we surprisingly mixed well despite these differences in beliefs, though admit-tingly we never really discussed it much. In college, I mixed with more white people but that was because everyone was white bar three Asians, two of which kept themselves to themselves. But, I was the only one to ever really sit with the two Asian girls and they often asked me to come sit with them away from the little group of acquaintances I'd made. Since then, I have more white friends/acquaintances but i'd say overall, my friends I speak to regularly are mostly Asian.
I wouldn't say i've ever made a concious choice to mix more with Asians, when i've had a choice, it's just so happened that our personalities have mixed more but I think, for a while, my lack of exposure with white friends, did mean I became a little more anxious about them potentially excepting me. I think (and obviously i'm generalising based on my personal experiences) Asians have been more tolerant of my quietness and less judgemental towards me not willing to try certain things and overall they tend to embrace me a lot more. For example, when i've made a few White aquaitances on holidays and such like i've found they've been much more pushy in terms of encouraging me to drink or partake in party games but then again, that is probably the types of white people i've happened to be exposed to rather then whites in general. TBH if anything i'm more ageist in terms of who I am more likely to socialise or feel comfortable with. I feel a lot more safe with older people and naturally gravitate towards them when I have opportunity to so do. I can't be around teenagers though, and while I have friends near my age, I've always struggled with socialising with males around my age. I can appear stiff around them because well they make me more nervous. It's idiotic but i'd trust getting in a 60 year old's car rather then a 20 year olds. It's stupid but I will trust the former more, maybe because I associate them more with my parents and therefore they seem the safer option or because I associate them less with bullies because of the age gap, i'm not sure. |

Re: Is anyone else more nervous around certain races of ppl
I feel the same as Only Human and Girl Interrupted with regards to feeling awkward around people my own age or younger and better around older people. I remember someone saying they felt less SA and more able to strike up a conversation with foreign people than people of their own country/ethnicity. I think that it's common to feel more uncomfortable around members of 'your own' group because as an SA outsider type person, you feel that you will fail when judged by their standards whereas people from another 'race', culture, or age will not apply those same standards to you.

Re: Is anyone else more nervous around certain races of ppl
I was thinking no difference but actually I find white people the least approachable and I'm half white myself. With anyone who isn't white I find I have normally a bit of a connection being not totally white but in a white dominated society.

Re: Is anyone else more nervous around certain races of ppl
Growing up in a predominatly white area with a lot of BNP supporters, It did take me a while to get used to 'ethnic minorities'. Now I love exploring London and seeing the various cultures there.
I get slightly uncomfortable when I see people dressed in the 'gangsta' attire, whether they are white, black or asian. Especially when they are in groups. Thats not a race issue. One thing I still have a problem with, is when many people who live here continue to speak their own language. If I moved to another country, i'd like to think i'd try and integrate myself more, learn their language. I don't feel comfortable when there are people around me in London, who obviously live there, talking in their own language. It makes me feel uncomfortable and paranoid (although a lot of things make me paranoid). Don't know if that makes me sound racist or not, but whatever. Quote:

Re: Is anyone else more nervous around certain races of ppl
I used to get a bit nervous around women with the whole Croydon facelift plus bling thing going on and guys with the whole puffa jacket, buzz cut/faux hawk look regardless of race. But I've learnt a really valuable lesson living where I live, which is basically the local little Balkans bordering on little North Africa (and full of folk who on the outside look like if you spilt their pint it would be the last thing you did), and that is to never to judge a book by its cover.
