Default Over 30s Club

After much discussion, some argument and a couple of punch-ups, we've decided to re-introduce the Over 30s Club. We're going to reinstate it as a sub-forum to the SA Room (much like the Games Room once was to the Lounge). We'd also like to reinstate it with a new name, and we'd like to put it to the board to come up with one. There might be a prize for the winner, if we can get Anne to cough up.

Have at it!

That's good news Wasn't it once called "old folks home" or does my memory play tricks on me? Not that I'm suggesting it should be called that.

I do believe it was, Raindrop (so Ren tells me). Bit before my time, you see

I like Old Folks Home, also I wondered if it could be passworded so only those who've reached 'that age' would be able to enter. That would probably be expecting too much though

My suggestion: Geriatrics' Grumbling Group (or without the word Grumbling)

Another suggestion for name The Golden Oldies

Something with a positive ring to it like 'life begins at 30'.

A thought for those who are awaiting the return of the Over 30s Club:

Is it now necessary? Can the need for an Over 30s Club be fulfilled by a social group rather than a sub-forum?

That's exactly what I was about to post! If there are going to be groups set up to cater for a small amount of people it might be better having them in the social groups section rather than on the board, otherwise it's just excluding many people on the open forum and may not be used that often.
Although it would be good if we could set up threads in the social groups rather than just make wall posts (or maybe you can and I just haven't looked around in them enough yet?)

Maybe I should set up a group for the 'Terrible Twenties'!

Come to think of it though how many newbies are even going to know these groups exist?

There's a link to the Social Groups in the navbar (above). They can also be accessed from profiles.

The FAQ/info sections may also be updated in the near future.

Trouble is how many people actually pay attention to the navbar?

Isn't that like saying "How many people bother to read what areas of the board there are?" :P A sticky about "Check out the social groups feature and see which ones are relevant to you" might be useful for those who don't read though

Well it's the main feature I use! (especially 'New Posts').
I don't really imagine people would use the social groups feature until they intend to stick around on the site anyway, in which case I'm sure they'll work out the ins and outs of the boards in short time!

When people join the board don't they get an introduction message or email or something? Maybe something about the groups or other features could have a brief mention in that?

See what was getting me about removing the youth section was that there were clearly members who were posting exclusively in that section and no where else, maybe because they felt more comfortable, i don't know.

If we simply had a youth group i could see many people simply not knowing it exists where's at least with a section they'll be able to find it.

^ Most young'uns today are quite good with all this techo-lark. I'm sure they'll work it out.

As I said - maybe when people sign up on SAUK there could be a welcome pm/email which explains this stuff to them. A brief overview of the site and its features.

Maybe this is something we could look at. As it stands, the following email is sent to newcomers...

I'm going to have to be rediculously awkward and say that many people probably don't read the welcoming email.

Well that's their own fault then isn't it?

I think if people got a welcoming pm on the site they'd be more likely to read it, or at least keep it and maybe read it later.

I think it would be good to have a welcoming message to people.

I think that having a room rather than a social group would be more useful.
The original room had a mixture of serious and light hearted threads. To mix these different sorts of posts together in a social group would feel awkward to me.
