Trying to identify a type of wasp/hornet that i saw on one of the bee hives.

I didn't get a good picture of it before it flew off but i don't think it was a hornet, this was a tad smaller and slimmer, interesting colours ..

I downloaded a nature bundle app and am using it to help me identify anything from bird song to flowers and trees. I've just been out and about and it's great fun. I hope the apps will help me to learn.
