Still trying to work my way through Harold Bloom's list. Going to take a break from it and try Harari's Sapiens next. Everyone seems to have read it except me.

^^ enjoyed ‘The finch’ until it got transplanted to Vegas about 2/3 of the way through, then I stopped enjoying it. Might need to give it another read.

Going back in for a second attempt at Shuggie Bain.
Read widely, read wisely SA-UK. Reading is the only proven cure for SA. USE your local libraries or LOSE them. Do the right thing. |

Re: What book(s) are you reading at the moment?
I’m reading Edward st Aubyn’s new novel, Double Blind. I’m a big fan of st Aubyn. In fact, he’s probably my favourite living novelist (the Melrose novels are superb). Double Blind is very interesting. It’s really a novel of ideas, in that the characters are mouthpieces for a range of ideas on ecology, Buddhism, the nature of consciousness, etc.
I’ve also bought the complete Dance to the Music of Time. Clive James reckoned it was the greatest work of literature since Ulysses, so I’m interested to see what it’s like. Has anyone read any of them? |

Re: What book(s) are you reading at the moment?
Talks about Somatic Experiencing therapy and talks about the faults of some modern Western Psychological treatments. Apparently talking therapies help to an extent but as trauma is stored in the body they aren't always too effective at dealing with trauma as talking is based on the mind but not the body. Apparently our modern culture teaches us to suppress our emotions rather than express or experience them which leads to trauma. The video that inspired me to read the book |

Bunker
What It Takes to Survive the Apocalypse By: Bradley Garrett I'm listening to this. It's started pretty well. It's about people prepping for disaster and planning to live off grid in bunker communities and on their own. It does appeal to me a bit I must admit. This is one of them: https://www.techeblog.com/vivos-xpoi...val-community/ I'm not worried about an impending disaster but it would be nice to live off grid maybe. |

Re: What book(s) are you reading at the moment?
Just finished reading Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. Took me a while to get into it, once I hit the Jonathan Strange section it picked up and I ploughed through it, but found the ending slightly flat. Still pretty enjoyable. Now reading you let me in by Camilla Bruce. Was on my library app to read list, but no idea where I heard about it. Coincidentally also features Faeries.

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, Booker Prize shortlisted in 2015. 400 pages in and all good so far, 300 to go. An epic romp.

A challenging, bracing book about our apparent inability to imagine an alternative to capitalism. He had such a gift for communicating complicated ideas. |

I’m re-reading this, as I should be saying “F**k it†more often instead of always stressing over every tiny little thing.

^ Ha, I've got a copy. Haven't read it yet though. Everytime I pick it up I think "f**k it, I'll read it later". So even the title alone has had an impact on me.

You can dip in & out of different chapters if you feel lazy. e.g “Say F**k It To What Other People Think Of You†is the one that resonates with me the most & my biggest issue in terms of social anxiety. The book overall does a good job discussing the importance we place on issues that are really quite trivial in the grand scheme of things. Really would recommend this to those struggling with SA/anxiety/overthinking & just generally sweating the small stuff. |

Re: What book(s) are you reading at the moment?
My only criticism of the whole ‘F*ck it’ genre, and quite a few self-help authors have ridden those coat tails in search of a quick buck, is that they can be so fleshed out and repetitive and you never retain the majority of it in any case. I always think of the book ‘Stop Thinking, Start Living’ everything you need is in the title, you don’t then need to read 160 pages underlining that. Save money, just read and remember the title, everything else is just filler to take your cash.
