The World's End - maybe 4/10

I'm not sure I really 'get' those Simon Pegg type films, I just find them a little strange. I realise they're really popular though. Just not for me.

watched Carnage last night on channel 4 again. I think it's really good. Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly and Christoph Waltz (not in a Tarantino film for once woo) are all great, and the script's really witty and clever. People probably dislike it because it's directed by the "poison dwarf"....which is quite a good reason really...but anyway 8/10

Midnight Run - Really enjoyable early Deniro crime comedy 8/10
The Heat - Enjoyable, a lot funnier than I expected 7/10
The Savages - Enjoyable Oliver Stone crime thriller, reminded me a bit of U-Turn in atmosphere though never quite hit those heights 6.5/10
Pontypool - Original take on zombie films, very enjoyable 7/10
Night Watch - Really bad, really dull, did not like 3/10
New Guy - Awful 90's highschool comedy...though I sorta enjoyed it 5/10
Harold and Kumar get the munchies - Okayish stoner comedy 6/10

Dreams of a Life 9/10.

I've been wanting to watch this for a while, but have put it off as it isn't exactly an uplifting topic. This is the documentary of Joyce Carol Vincent, the woman who died in her London flat in 2003, but her body was only found three years later. It is a very interesting story, considering how popular she was, and some of the amazing things she experienced in her life. In the final years of her life, her next of kin was her bank manager, which sort of sums up her tragic end really. The interviews in the film of the people that knew her was the best part of the film really. There are one or two of the interviewees who said a few odd things- I'm not really sure how to describe it.

A powerful documentary I thought, and it certainly brought a tear to my eye.

starlingrad 2013
big budget russian epic war movie of one of the bloodiest battles in human history. i could only find english subs translated from polish which were mostly broken english, some missing mostly the german dialog and out of sync so i didn't know what the hell was going on but omg the cinematography, vfx and cgi was gorgeous and it had the biggest explosions i've ever seen in a war movie. the russians soldiers on fire attacking the germans gave me goosebumbs, made my hair stand on end and slack jawed over the madness of it all. 7.5/10

silence
lovely little irish film about this sound recordist who goes back to his roots to make recordings of places free from man made noise. he meets a few interesting characters on the way discussing the philosophy of silence. its a real thinking mans film filled with lots of nothing happening but the sound of nature. the only issue i had with it was the upsetting archival footage of islanders leaving for the mainland who drowned their dog. it was staged but that scene still left me traumatised. 6/10

Meh, I loved the chemistry between the two main leads and I laughed a few times but the story was rubbish.

The Last Samurai 9/10

Seen it before but got the urge to watch it again. A utterly enjoyable flick, even if it did feature Tom Cruise in yet another "look how amazing I am" role and portrayed the Samurai in a flawed light. If you haven't seen the deleted scenes yet I'd highly recommend watching the beheading scene, it's a shame they edited it out of the final cut but then I suppose they'd have to make the film an 18 certificate if they kept it in.

good film!

Maniac I wouldn't recommend this really, unless you have a strong stomach for horror stuff. I think I must be going soft, I found this quite upsetting lol, and some of the images keep coming back to me

But it's well done, very creepy, and props to Elijah Wood for starring in a properly unpleasant horror film. 8/10

The Night of the Hunter Interesting film this. Great performance by Robert Mitchum, and some strange and creative cinematography and music. Apparently it was the first and last movie the guy directed, shame that. 10/10

An aesthetic writ large over a lot of the early Simpsons episodes. Great film indeed.

The Family Stone - 0/10

Oh my golly gosh, this was like the worst Christmas film ever. The whole family were so mean and unlikable to SJP.

Jack - 3/10

Not very funny and unintentionally creepy throughout. I especially disliked the parts where the divorcee woman kept trying to have sex with Robin Williams (who plays a ten year old boy who looks like an adult). Did Coppola suffer a head injury mid way through his career that made him forget how to be a good director?

Four Christmases - Reece Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn reluctantly visit their families over the holidays. It's not very funny and the plot is only obvious an hour in (that being Witherspoon and Vaughn's characters realising they don't know each other that well at all). The highlight is Vaughn's character's sister-in-law's boobs. 4/10

Seven Psychopaths - 6.5/10

There were some parts which I really enjoyed and had me laughing a lot; but for the most part I found it quite an average film, nothing special.

The Hobbit:The Desolation of Smaug 9/10

I think this has to be the best film I have seen all year but I really like The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, was very long but I was so in to it that I didn't even notice the time, the only thing that let it down was the ending because it stops in a particular place that makes you really want to watch the next one but I have to wait a year before it comes out.

The Story Lady. A pretty obscure tv movie with Jessica Tandy about an old lady who becomes an unlikely celebrity, reading children's stories on public access tv. Maybe the Christmas booze was to blame, but I thought it was rather lovely. 7/10

I liked the ending. The rest of it seemed to be used to show off the location and costumes.

Crocodile Dundee - The first half, set in Australia, wasn't up to much at all but it improved when Dundee went over to New York. I didn't like how the fact the woman kissed Dundee unbeknownst to her boyfriend (it doesn't matter if that boyfriend was a jerk) was not addressed. Not as funny as I thought it would be from what others have said, nor as crude as I was expecting. 6/10

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix 7/10.
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince 8/10.

When I first watched these films ages ago, I thought they weren't very good, but watching them a second time around, I actually really enjoyed them.

With Half Blood Prince, I couldn't stand all the lovey dovey romantic relationship stuff. Keep that stuff to rom coms please!
