'What do you know'- what's does it mean when someone asks this?
Probably a stupid question and obvious answer, but what does it mean when someone asks 'what do you know?'. A man at work often says this after I say hello to him, and I don't really know how to respond.. I usually just say something like 'not a lot' followed by an awkward laugh. Is he asking me how I am? What I've been up to? It makes me anxious and I feel like an idiot!

Re: 'What do you know'- what's does it mean when someone asks this?
I think it's just another way of saying "What have you been up to?" although I don't think I've ever been asked it myself. Answering with "Not a lot" is a suitable answer for the likely meanings, so I wouldn't worry about feeling like an idiot.
It seem similar to the stupid "Are you winning?" question people sometimes ask. |

It's just an invitation to talk. I think it's an older generation thing. Maybe a regional thing? Don't hear of it much here

I think it means do you know anything interesting.
It is used more by older people. |

The one I get from young black men at work, is "What you saying?"... Well you phoned me and I just said 'hi', so I guess 'hi' is what I'm saying. The other one is "wuts good?"... ummm nothing is good, being alive is dull and pointless, how can I help?

I've never heard "what do you know?" as a greeting. I guess I need to get out more.
Maybe it's regional. |

My family use this phrase a lot, it's just a different way of saying how are you and what have you been up to etc.
"Morning D1662, what d'you know then?" |

I've not heard of this as a greeting before either. I originally thought he does this to catch people off guard as they aren't expecting it. As it's predictable, you could think of some witty comebacks. But based on others it sounds like this could be a rhetorical greeting like "You alright?" or "what's up?" where we're not expecting a direct answer to that question and it's instead just equivalent to "hello".

Or even better walk up to him and scream "WHAT DO I KNOW?!?!"

^^ just start telling him all the things you know.
That would shut him up quite rapidly. |

Thanks for your replies, he’s a friendly person but it doesn’t help, I still can’t think of anything interesting or funny to say. I guess I could just ask him what he knows instead before he gets a chance to ask it... but don’t know if I have the confidence for that. I’m a quiet speaker so he may not hear me anyway..
