Default Guide to some IRC Clients, e.g. chatzilla, kvirc, icechat

There are a number of widely-used IRC clients that you can use to access the SAUK chat rooms if you prefer not to join via the main site. Instructions for using three of the common clients to access SAUK are provided below:

CHATZILLA (thanks to Medea for these instructions)

If you have firefox you can use the add-on "Chatzilla" which is an irc client built into the browser. Hopefully this step by step guide will help people to get onto chatzilla and use it.

First you need to go to Tools and then Add-ons. Click Add-ons and search for chatzilla, like this:

then click on "Add to Firefox"

click "install now" it should then install and show the following screen:

click on restart to get the next screen:

You have now installed ChatZilla into your browser!

To open chatzilla, go to tools and you will see chatzilla has now appeared in your list:

Click on ChatZilla to bring up the ChatZilla box.

Now type in /server anchor.foonetic.net as shown above.

You should now get this screen:

You will need to add an exception (clicking the words "add an exception" in the red box).

You will now get this box:

Click on "Confirm Security Exception" to join the server.

To join #sauk you will need to type what is shown in the box above. You will now be taken into #sauk and are ready to chat!

ICECHAT (thanks to Kiada for these instructions)

Please note: if you're comfortable with downloading and installing files, and are more interested in learning how to configure IceChat - install IceChat and jump to step 12. Otherwise, heres a step-by-step of how to download and install IceChat.

1) The first step is to go to the IceChat website and download the software. Just for ease of use, heres a direct link:

Direct link to software.

The filename is icechat-setup.exe and its a small download. Click 'Save file' to save it to your computer, and then run the icechat-setup.exe file.

Configuring

12) After IceChat has started, you will be presented with a 'IceChat First Time Setup' window. In the nickname box, enter your nickname and click the big green arrow:

13) You will now be presented with a 'Server Name' form. Delete the default 'irc.quakenet.org' and replace it with 'anchor.foonetic.net' - then click on the big green arrow again:

14) Now all you need to do is click the big green arrow again:

__________________________________________________ ___

15) Next you will be presented with the IceChat window. This from now on will be your home for chat! We still have a bit more configuration to go through though. On the left hand side under 'Favourite Servers', right click 'chat.serenia.net' and click 'Edit server' (look for the red dots on the image below for extra guidance):

__________________________________________________ ___

16) The 'Server Editor' window should now appear. On the left underneath 'Options' and directly below 'Basic' - click 'Startup':

17) On the new 'Startup Options' window, check the 'Auto-Connect on IceChat Startup' box. This will connect to anchor.foonetic.net (i.e. sauk chat) automatically when IceChat is opened:

ICECHAT (Part 3)

18) Click on the 'AutoJoin List' underneath 'Options' on the left hand side. Then, where the blue dot is on the image below, first type '#sauk' and click 'Add' - then type '#lounge' and click 'Add'. After doing this your screen should look like mine:

__________________________________________________ ___

19) Click the 'Connect Now' button at the bottom of the settings screen. Congratulations! You're now setup. All you have to do next time you want to enter chat, is double-click the 'IceChat' icon on your desktop, and you should be logged straight in!

Finding your way around

Most of this will be familiar if you're changing from the Java based chat to IceChat, but incase you've never used chat before heres a few pointers.

Red Asterisk :- To the left of the red asterisk is the list of rooms you're currently connected to. Click #sauk to switch to #sauk, and #lounge to switch to #lounge

Red Circle :- This is where you type to chat!

Red Triangle :- The list of users currently in the room!
