No, nobody ever believes me when they find out how old I am. People seem to think it's a big compliment but I've always found it to just be yet another source of embarrassment and reason to feel 'wrong'.

I seem to have always looked anything but my actual age. When I was a kid, people used to make fun of me for looking old somehow. There was this horrible girl a year above who I'd randomly bump into throughout school, and she'd always call me '60 Year Old' and generally make me feel like crap. I think also I was once compared to the grandpa from Hey Arnold.

Nowadays, no one ever believes I'm as old as I am. I'm 32 and I still get ID'd and sized up when I buy alcohol, and whenever anyone brings up my age they say I look at least 10 years younger.

Make up your mind, people!

Apparently not.

I'm nearly 27 but I've never been estimated over 24.

Somewhere between 21-24 is the usual guess people make.

People always used to presume I was younger. That was probably partly due to my slight build. I think the way you dress and general demeanor influence perception of age too. Definitely look my age now (mid 40's). Not that I mind though, I'm fascinated by the onset of greying hair

I’ve lost count of the amount of times people say I don’t look my age.

I always never told anybody my age . Recently I gave in at work and told them I was 47 because I was fed of them telling me I was still young and wasnt too old to get married and settled.
They were shocked they all thought I was like 30 - 35.

I dont understand it , I have grey hairs, balding, and sunburnt skin from too many safaris. To me I look 47!

In some ways its a pain as I never quite get along with any age group as they all sort of feel
lm not one of them.

I was refused by ASDA when tryinto buy alcohol when I was 30 for being too young.

When I lived in Sweden I could buy discounted under 25 plane tickets when I was 35(you used to just have to show a student card and look young enough). I did however have to show my passport to buy alcohol because I didnt look old even though i was over thirty!

I also think the way you act. I still feel like 18 yrs and probably act like a 25 year old which sort of reinforces the opinion people have of my age.

Until a few years ago, I looked young for my age. Now I think it's starting to catch up with me. I'm just waiting for the full Dorian Gray moment. My last boss couldn't believe it when he saw my passport. He thought I was about 6-10 years younger. And I got IDed by a younger guy in Tesco a year or two ago who told me I had a funny story to tell my husband. No, my youthful look matches my lack of progress in life. I wonder if it's body language as well as face. My hair has definitely aged.

I'm sure I look middle-aged to young people though. They look young to me. I don't feel like I am like them or the middle aged people. It's confusing. I feel about 30, 35 except when I'm with my Dad when I feel about 22.

That’s exactly how I see it too. People say ‘Oh you’re so lucky! What’s your secret?’ I say it’s a lack of living. You try spending the majority of your life hiding indoors because you’re terrified of the world and being a part of it and you’d probably look younger too. I’d not recommend it to anyone though.

I think I look around 10 years older than I am.
Drinking, smoking, lack of sleep for years etc.

I always put my youthful looks done to the lack of stress caused by the total absence of women in my life

Apologies to the ladies, I’m sure us men probably cause you just as much stress!

I have the typical middle-aged guy's big belly (partly my fault, partly well-known side effect of Depakote aka Depabloat) and my bald spot seems to get bigger every time the barber shows me the back in a mirror. Judging from that I would say I look my age or a little bit older (I'm 48). But I still wear hoodies, band t-shirts from indie gigs I go to, and trainers, so I dress a little younger. There's a meme on the internet "Too old for hoodies, too young for cardigans", I actually wear cardigans at home, but I could probably do with a more mature wardrobe.

A relative I'd never met before, visited last year and was shocked when she found out how old I was - she thought I was 15 years younger! Until I was about 28 people thought I was 16 or 17. It could just be that many people my age look older than their years as opposed to me looking very young though.

I don't wear much make up, my hair is uncoloured and in a simple style, and my demeanour is one of reticence and shyness so that could also be why I seem to be younger. The more glamorous and "done" a woman looks, the older she appears to be, especially if she's confident and has good social skills. A lot of women in their early 20s I see, look like well preserved 40 year olds.

I also agree with others regarding experience; if you've lived a full life, it usually shows in your face particularly if you've smoked, drank and sun bathed.

At some point in time the spot gets so big barbers stop showing you back of your head unless you ask them

I'll be 25 on Saturday. I was surprised to find out that the people on my course thought I was around 18. No wonder I got funny looks when I said I have a four year old.

I have never heard of a hostel refusing business from customers just because they were over 40. Sounds a bit like that 1970's sci film film where they killed off people once they reached the age of 30 - Logan's Run? What would be their reasoning for having a policy like that?

Happy birthday when it comes Lettie, hope you have a lovely day!

I'm 29, but most people think I'm nowhere near it. On a recent course I did, I was mostly hanging with 21-25 year olds and the majority of them thought I was younger than them. Been a similar story at jobs too.

I do have a stray grey hair or ten appearing on the sides which is probably a sign that my youthful appearance is about to finish.

I'm in my early 40s but could probably pass for 10 years younger. Starting to get some grey hairs now though, though I am at least keeping my hair so far!

I agree with what Clem wrote; hiding indoors for years and not smiling as much as you ought to be (laughter lines) means you probably don't age as fast as you would.

I look at least 15 years younger than my age.
And age means that I am finally getting rid of my hamster cheeks so that I no longer look like Tom Chaplin from Keane circa 2004. (neither does Tom Chaplin as his face seems to have done the same thing).
Small mercies eh!
