Question What do people get out of this website?

I was just wondering what people really like about this site and what they hope to gain from posting here? What keeps them coming back?

I have no expectations of posting here. I like the people, I still get to learn a few things, I like sharing my experiences and offer a few thoughts along the way too. Suppose I just enjoy the place, or I'd not bother with it. It was also kind to me when I was in a far darker place than I am today, so it's nice to try to give something back if I can.

I think for me, it's learning that I'm not alone in the way I feel, and to try to inspire others to overcome their own issues. I really believe it's possible to function a lot better despite having a history of SA and other mental health issues.

If they gave me some Opal Fruits then they'd probably be a bit out of date!

I wouldn't be impressed.

Some interactions with people who "get me" and can relate to things which are a struggle for me but simple and straightforward for others.

Its somewhere to come when you feel that no one else will understand. There's no fear of judgement here. If someone has an opposing viewpoint they will generally express it in a sensitive and considerate way which can help to balance things.

Default Re: What do people get out of this website?

I originally came here many many moons ago in the hope of feeling less alone by meeting other people who suffered with the same 'thing' as me and also with the ultimate goal of confronting my fears and totally beating SA.

However, fast forward 16 years and I've finally come to accept that I'll never be free of SA because I've had it for the majority of my life now. And, if I'm entirely honest, I'm no longer prepared to put myself through hell in the vain attempt that I might rid myself of this disorder when I may not have that many years ahead of me anyway (I'm not that ancient but I am middle aged and extremely world weary )

So, the only reason I come here now is that it's something to do when I'm bored plus I genuinely believe that a lot of the posters who pass through here are some of the loveliest people you could ever wish to know. Also, it's the one place I can express what i'm thinking or feeling and be guaranteed that there will be others who totally emphasise.

It will be a sad day if and when SAUK disappears because if it wasn't for this place I would never have met certain individuals who have played a massive and important part in my life.

This isn't too far from my own experience; back when I discovered SAUK, I thought - and wished - my life was over, but when I needed it most, the support I received here gave me the strength to fight for what I needed (I had no income, no friends, no family, no help from outside agencies, no doctor - I still have no doctor, but you can't have everything) and begin building a life. It was also from a post on here that I discovered meetup, which, 2 1/2 years later, began to revolutionise my life. Last but definitely not least, in June 2013 I met my fiancée here and although we parted company a little over a month ago, the four years we had together were happier than I could ever have imagined and the help she gave me in overcoming the effects of Asperger's was instrumental in enabling me to make the most of the opportunities I've created in the past two years.

I'm still here because, like Ajax, I want to help others; most often, I do feel as though what I say isn't well-received, perhaps because many of you think that I don't understand what you're going through, or that the advice I give isn't relative to you (and I appreciate that it may not be, we are all different but all I can tell you is what worked for me), but I can relate to so many posts, so many of the experiences you're going through, because in a lot of cases, I have been there. I spent most of my life thinking that there was no hope, no way forward - and I wish I could have met someone who had been through it and out the other side (although I am not completely out the other side, I still have issues, they just affect me more rarely, for shorter periods of time and I am able to control them - most of the time) twenty or thirty years ago. Anyway, I will continue trying to help and if I can help even one person, that's great (I'd love to help everyone though!).

I know I don't post much at present, but that is mostly because I don't have time - I do follow everything here as much as I can and share in your triumphs as well as being saddened when things aren't going well; there are so many people here I care about, even though I don't say it and you don't know it - sometimes I wish I could just be there to give you all a hug (which shows how far I've come, I used to afraid of physical contact!). I feel like I am part of community - although more on the fringes than I used to be - and belong here, you all mean so much to me and sometimes I read threads (which by the time I've found them have reached a point where my reply would be irrelevant, so I don't post) just to discover how everyone is.

It's no exaggeration to say that SAUK saved my life and I can never repay the debt I owe this site - not that I am trying to do that, my reasons for being here still run deeper than that; apart from my recent breakup, I am leading a better life now than I could ever have imagined at any time previously - I'm even able to cope with losing the love of my life, when at any other time in my life I would have crumbled completely! At 55, I am happier than I have ever been (love life excepted) and if there is one reason above all for me being here, it's to show that it's never too late to change your life for the better.

I know it's a bit of a cliché, but you generally get out what you put in. Using it positively and constructively etc. Don't ever compare yourself, don't dwell on stuff, keep supporting others but most importantly get out there and live your life.

Many people don't really want to change, or at least aren't ready to, because change is extremely challenging and difficult. I even had a therapist say this to me once after several years, which was a shock and made me feel quite ill, and also angry, but it also made me dig that little bit deeper.

So even though I still struggle a lot, I definitely feel I have grown, and these boards have absolutely helped me feel I am not alone during the darkest times.

I don't know

I do know when it wasn't up this morning I was even more bored than usual

I suppose I use it as a time waster and it "helps" to be around folk with similiar problems instead of feeling like a complete outcast. (Which I manage to do enough at work)

I did have some sort of relationship that started on here many years ago (and ended many years ago) .so I guess there was that.

I also have met a good friend which started here too..unfortunately the distance means meeting up isnt that frequent. If I could make a few more friends that would be good...preferably someone on my side of the country..It's unlikely though, theres not many folk round here near me and I'm being a bit shit with responding/staying in touch with people..I wouldnt be my friend so I don't really expect anyone else to.

I met my boyfriend through this site and my current group of friends. I would love to make more friends as well. Key thing is to go to meetups and actually meet people in my opinion. Whereabouts in london do you live?

It gives me somewhere to go when I'm not feeling too good. It helps to distract me when I've nothing to do, being able to come on here helps stop stupid thoughts entering my head, ultimately stopping me from doing something stupid. The people on here are kind, Understanding and supportive. There is no other site like this one.

It was because of this site and the information posted here by other users that I finally went to see a new doctor about my issues, which I'm now getting help with.

The people on here aren't judgemental, You can have an educated debate without it getting heated and without it turning into one of those "I'll shank u blud" type arguments. That and you can have a laugh here too.

In short, It gives me somewhere to go and helps keep my mind busy when I feel the need to kill myself. It means I interact with other human beings who aren't judgemental assholes and it helped me get help that I desperately needed.
