[B][I]“When the last scene of all comes, and death takes his master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws and his eyes sad, but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death.”

This was my first dog,Ben .I had him for 8 years. He was bigger than the average German Shepherd due to his parents coming from German breeding stock as I think they tend to be bigger than British and American versions. His head was so heavy he was the only dog of his type I saw who walked around with it drooping the whole time as he found it hard to hold up.I regret many things now and wish I could have looked after him better but I was still youngish and at school when we first got him.

A dog becomes much more than a pet when you are a shy loner. They become a substitute friend or family member and offer more love and loyalty that many people. In one way it remains a puppy and is dependant on you for food and care. On the other hand this dog was capable of killing a man or at least causing extensive injury so you also respect and admire him. I walked him often on the park but this never got me to talk more to people or make friends as some dog walkers claim to as being shy meant this unlikely, dog or not.

When walking around the country I see many memorial plaques on benches to lost loved ones. They are quite moving and often have a line or more of poetry. My favourite however was the simple line “She was magnificent!” which is what I would like to echo for my first dog with: “He was magnificent!” If my dogs have a soul and exist anywhere in eternity I will find my pack wherever they may be and reunite us all together again even if I have to rip Satan's bollocks clean off with my bare hands.

    He's beautiful

That was a lovely post. I'd love to have a dog like that, with such a connection and friendship.

Thanks, some people mock such an animal bond as its unconditional love and so not earned like with humans but then dogs are not judgemental, backstabbing and traitorous either.
