Inspirational quotes/sayings etc

I had a feeling this thread already existed but having searched I couldn`t find it? (If I`m duplicating I apologise and maybe a mod could join them?) Anyhoo I think we should have a place we can share all the quotes/sayings/poems/lyrics that have inspired us, helped us or made us look at/think about our SA and the way we see the world:)
Here are a couple of my favourites at the minute:

"Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you're right." ~ Henry Ford

"To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment."~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Great works are performed, not by strength, but by perseverance." ~ Samuel Johnson

Hi GI, hope you're well.

Someone once gave me this speech about if you're at work 8 hours a day to work hard for 8 hours since it's the best way to make something for yourself. I liked what he said and it inspired me. He happened to be the guy that sat reading the paper all day lol.

Anywho..

they are pretty bloody good!

GOOD WILL HUNTING

Sean: Thought about what you said to me the other day, about my painting. Stayed up half the night thinking about it. Something occurred to me... fell into a deep peaceful sleep, and haven't thought about you since. Do you know what occurred to me?
Will: No.
Sean: You're just a kid, you don't have the faintest idea what you're talkin' about.
Will: Why thank you.
Sean: It's all right. You've never been out of Boston.
Will: Nope.
Sean: So if I asked you about art, you'd probably give me the skinny on every art book ever written. Michelangelo, you know a lot about him. Life's work, political aspirations, him and the pope, sexual orientations, the whole works, right? But I'll bet you can't tell me what it smells like in the Sistine Chapel. You've never actually stood there and looked up at that beautiful ceiling; seen that. If I ask you about women, you'd probably give me a syllabus about your personal favorites. You may have even been laid a few times. But you can't tell me what it feels like to wake up next to a woman and feel truly happy. You're a tough kid. And I'd ask you about war, you'd probably throw Shakespeare at me, right, "once more unto the breach dear friends." But you've never been near one. You've never held your best friend's head in your lap, watch him gasp his last breath looking to you for help. I'd ask you about love, you'd probably quote me a sonnet. But you've never looked at a woman and been totally vulnerable. Known someone that could level you with her eyes, feeling like God put an angel on earth just for you. Who could rescue you from the depths of hell. And you wouldn't know what it's like to be her angel, to have that love for her, be there forever, through anything, through cancer. And you wouldn't know about sleeping sitting up in the hospital room for two months, holding her hand, because the doctors could see in your eyes, that the terms "visiting hours" don't apply to you. You don't know about real loss, 'cause it only occurs when you've loved something more than you love yourself. And I doubt you've ever dared to love anybody that much. And look at you... I don't see an intelligent, confident man... I see a cocky, scared shitless kid. But you're a genius Will. No one denies that. No one could possibly understand the depths of you. But you presume to know everything about me because you saw a painting of mine, and you ripped my ****ing life apart. You're an orphan right?
[Will nods]
Sean: You think I know the first thing about how hard your life has been, how you feel, who you are, because I read Oliver Twist? Does that encapsulate you? Personally... I don't give a shit about all that, because you know what, I can't learn anything from you, I can't read in some ****in' book. Unless you want to talk about you, who you are. Then I'm fascinated. I'm in. But you don't want to do that do you sport? You're terrified of what you might say. Your move, chief.

Not sure who this is by but I remember seeing someone on here have it as their signature a good while back now and it really summed up my need to try and do and view things differently.

Re: Inspirational quotes/sayings etc

i love this poem too, i didn't write it found it in a book. its so true!

WHO IS NOT RECOVERING?

Who is not recovering, from something in their past?
From a painful loss, a relationship that didn’t last?
Who is not recovering, from harsh words that cut, and scarred?
Or decisions that were made, that made the journey hard?

Who is not recovering, from setbacks and despair?
From a life crying out for healing, for mending, and repair?
Who is not recovering, from disappointment after a failed goal?
From illness of the spirit, or desperation of the soul?

We are all like pilgrims, on a journey, where we fall.
The road sometimes gets bumpy, sometimes we hit a wall.
We have much to teach each other, of lessons we have learned.
As we opted for the straight path, or the times we chose to turn.

Recovering is discovering, that we have much to give.
That all of our experiences, have served to help us live.
Recovering is uncovering, the gifts we still possess,
And bringing them to the light of day, and basking in success.

Yes, we are all recovering, as we live from day to day.
And we all seek a caring hand, when we seem to lose our way.
Case managers and consumers, seeking comfort, and release.
Both pilgrims on the journey, together we’ll find peace.

1995, Wally Kisthardt.

Well my dad always says 'concentrate on your efforts and don't worry about results - you can't control them, so just be happy that you're doing the best you can. You never know what's in store for you for the future'

This quote may seem kind of uncaring and mocking to those who are depresed or suicidal, but I think it makes a good point.

I like that :) Had it on my myspace for ages. Didn't know said it but I know Lisa said it in Girl, Interrupted :D

Two quotes that have stuck out for me are:
"When walking through hell walk faster" which I think is some rephrasing of a Churchill quote or something, and
"Live or die but don't poison everything" - Anne Sexton. At first I thought it was quite offensive, but I don't know, it just sticks in my head.

A couple of quotes which spoke to me when having a bad day :

When you feel that you have reached the end
and you cannot go one step further,
when life seems to be drained of all purpose;
what a wonderful opportunity
to start all over again,
to turn over a new page ~ Eileen Caddy

What does not destroy me,
makes me stronger ~ Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (1844-1900)

and one which I only just came across but which I instantly loved!

and make a brand new end ~ Author Unknown

You can overcome any fear if you will only make up your mind to do so. For remember, fear doesnt exist anywhere except in the mind.

Inaction breads doubt and fear, Action breads confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit at home and think about it, go out and get busy.
