Re: What profession would you pursue if SAD didn't stand in your way?

When I was a little kid I wanted to be a policeman.

I thought about joining the Navy when I was younger. I made it to the recruitment centre when I was 18, but I didn't complete my application...

Re: Sticks and stones break bones, words don't

I think you would be hard-pressed to find someone who is "completely fine" with themselves, but I don't think a person feeling superior to someone else necessarily denotes some underlying insecurity...

Re: It's not always about 'you' (ramble)

How many people is that roughly? Are they all in therapy and taking medication because they hate themselves?

It was a catchy quote, but I don't think there's much truth to it. Its just a coping...

Re: It's not always about 'you' (ramble)

The first part is true, not so sure about the second. But then I suppose it shouldn't really matter should it?

Re: It's not always about 'you' (ramble)

Just be yourself! No wait, not like that...

I learnt long ago never to complain to anyone about my lot in life, or ever speak of my worries and insecurities, lest I be accused of wallowing or self...

Re: Things I miss about the old normal (loneliness/isolation)

^ To an extent they would be required to limit their exposure to the general population, but obviously in this scenario there would always be a greater risk of infection for the most vulnerable in...

Re: Things I miss about the old normal (loneliness/isolation)

I suspect that the lasting effects of lockdown will prove to be worse than if we had continued more or less as normal, particularly with regard to mental health and the economy. I'll be interested to...

Re: Sticks and stones break bones, words don't

It depends what you mean by "harm". if you mean physical harm, then obviously words can't hurt you. If you mean emotional harm, it depends on what state of mind you are in and what the other person...

Re: If you could go back, would you?

Yeah I'd definitely take the chance and start again at 14. I pretty much regret every major decision that I made after that point.

Re: I turn 30 today

I stopped really celebrating birthdays when I was about 12 because I hated all the attention (although I still liked getting presents, whereas now I could take or leave them). I only went out on my...

Re: Does anyone feel they'll never move on from parts of their life?

I don't think I've ever said that I was too old to do anything.

I think that the OP was referring to being unable to move on from a traumatic time in one's life, or cope with the feeling that...

Re: Does anyone feel they'll never move on from parts of their life?

I'm 35 and I pretty much feel like this. I had a pretty lonely and awkward adolescence and by the time I got to University I really struggled to interact with other people, so after the first couple...

Re: If you’d had different parenting, would you be ‘normal’

Yes, I suspect you're right about this. I've come to realise that a lot of his behaviour could be explained by him trying to deflect his own insecurities on to others.

Re: Bullying, belittling, and overly critical family member or friends

A lot of the time people try to cover up their own insecurities by picking on or highlighting someone who they perceive to be weaker or not as good as them. This used to happen to me all the time at...

Re: Anyone else quite enjoying the coronavirus lockdown?

In general yes the lockdown seems to working in my favour - its basically an extended version of my typical weekend (even down to my daily hour long walk). Working from home is a bit of a nightmare,...

Re: If you’d had different parenting, would you be ‘normal’

I think there are way too many variables that go in to making a person to answer that question. Parents, grandparents, siblings, friends, birth order, appearance, health, class, family income, where...

Re: Want to Haircut at home, after watching youtube

I decided to just buy a hat rather than risk cutting my own hair. I'm working from home now, so there's no need to look tidy anymore. If I lived with someone else I'd get them to buzz it on grade 5...

Re: Do you Drink or take other things to cope

Alcohol is pretty much the only thing that helps with my social anxiety. People often tell me I am "so much better" when I'm drunk (meaning more entertaining to them), which would probably be an...

Re: Struggling to reply to messages and just so fed up in general

Sure about that?

I suppose the point I was making to the OP (or anyone else reading) was that you don't really have a choice as to whether or not you care what other people think, so its probably...

Re: Struggling to reply to messages and just so fed up in general

Pretty much everyone thinks that way. We’re social animals that are predisposed to wanting to be accepted by the group. Its how we evolved, its in our genes, its how we survived. If you think about...
