I don't really travel about enough to encounter many indie coffee shops, unfortunately, although what ones I have seen seem to be very small places with very little seating.

I also think the general cleanliness of some big chains leave a lot to be desired,

I actually don't mind M&S coffee,. it's usually very tasty and the staff seem okay.
McDonald's coffee is actually okay as well, although I rarely visit,.. just on the odd long motorway journey,
