Default Prefer to stay in on New Years Eve?

Does anyone else stay in on New Years Eve and just listen to the fireworks? I like doing this in the warmth and comfort of my own home.
I like the build up to midnight and watching stuff on the TV or my phone.
I never understood the appeal of going out in the cold!

I'm not saying this to be cool or different but I don't celebrate anything.

Even if I had somewhere to go, I don't think I'd want to.

I've noticed in recent years how I've gone from dreading it turning midnight, going out of my way to try to not notice The Big Moment, to it maybe eliciting a tut before I get on with whatever I was doing. The years have barrelled on too long for it to be worth caring about. I mean, 2024? Really? 2023 was already pushing it. What's next, 2025? These are nonsense numbers.

I dread fireworks displays. My dogs used to be terrified. My last dog wasn’t luckily but I think they are mostly overrated. Staying in, however, is my go to regardless of what day of the week it is. I would like to gift my mum the opportunity to spend News Years out with me but I just couldn’t cope with crowds bobbing around me or the excessive squealing young girls seem to do when excitable. My favourite New Years is sticking on a completely unrelated film and sending obligatory polite Happy New Years texts to people I never will speak to again until the next one. I am more cheerful than I sound. But I think it’s lovely you enjoy it and there’s nothing wrong with enjoying a banger or two!

^ luckily no one round here does fireworks at NYE. I hate them too. I hate that it upsets my cats but I'm also scared of them as well .

Staying up until midnight is really difficult me for to do haha

I usually fall asleep before the clock strikes 12. Although if I did stay up, then I would probably end up bracing for impact while landing into the New Year. While also muttering something about lost years and Tunnocks milk chocolate teacakes.

Part of me likes just staying at home chilling out, but another part of me wants to go out and be with lots of people. I confuse myself a lot.
I guess it’s because I spent so much of my younger years saying no to things and just staying at home alone that I want to make up for lost time. But now I’m more confident, and have improved a lot with SA, I have hardly any family around and not many friends. And the friends I do have don’t really like going out, or are busy making families.
Ideally I’d like to sit in a cosy pub, rather than a loud boisterous pub, and have a few drinks, play games and count in the new year. But I can’t see that happening unless I go on my own, and that would be very difficult.

I shall be in the house, the same as the other 364 days of the year. Might go to bed before midnight and pretend nothing is happening. Already taken all my Christmas stuff down.

I'm someone who does unfortunately suffer from the typical 'New Year's Blues', where I'm generally feeling pretty low and reminiscent on both New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. I've not celebrated it for many years and I can't honestly see that situation changing.

To me, and no doubt many others, it's just another year of problems and struggle. Same issues - different year. Don't get me wrong, I never used to be this way whilst growing up. I quite enjoyed some of them. It only really 'hit' me as I got into my early twenties and began to see why the likes of my parents are often 'gloomy' at the event too.

For a number of years now, I've watched a particular Twitch Livestreamer who livestreams over both Christmas and New Year. It does generally help to take my mind off things (I've actually got it on in the background whilst I'm typing this).

There's only been one occasion I've been 'out' at New Year and by that, I was away from home spending it with my brother - and we were back in his flat long before midnight to see it in on the TV. I think it was New Year's Eve 2017, going into New Year's Day 2018. We went out for a few beers at around 5/6pm, got a takeaway on the way back and then basically opened a bottle of champagne he bought at midnight. I was in bed about half an hour later and that was it...!

Oh yes - there was one other occasion some 30 years ago where I spent it with my grandparents (father's side) as my parents were out themselves to a theatre, if memory serves me. It was given to them as a gift. That wasn't the greatest of times because whilst we saw it in on TV, I wasn't in the best of moods because I knew I had an eye operation coming up about six weeks later... Not great to think about when you were eight years old at the time.

Other than that, I've always been at home either watching it on TV (listening to all the palaver going on outside) or even finding myself falling asleep before hand.

^ I somehow only managed to have one mince pie, so I'm a little regretful of that

Last night I really struggled to stay awake. So it was like a countdown to bedtime rather than a count down to the new year.

By 4am I'd spent 12.5% of 2024 changing a flat tyre. So that was nice.
